4th Anniversary

I'd suggest giving it a different name than "The Modern Age" but instead name it "The Year of Grind". Basically that really is what the past year was about. Rom, Nuk and Dyson Rep Grind. Summer and Winter Grind. And to top it off the Grindyversary.

The Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age, and Modern Age are all part of a theme that actually refers to something else. I did break it up for the "Year of Hell", due to extraordinary circumstances, but that was in keeping with Trek as that is also the title of a Voyager episode.
Names like "The Year of Grind" and "Grindyversary", while appropriate, seem childish to me. Thanks for the suggestion, but I'll pass. - Peregrine Falcon (talk) 13:44, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Cryptic's history with the KDF

Kudos for compiling this comprehensive collection of facts. Thanks for including & updating it here on your page. It's good to know it doesn't get lost in some closed, Nirvana-archived forum thread. Thanks. -- Markonian 21:12, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

Impressive compilation -- it was the inspiration for the STO Timeline article. For what it's worth, I switched my personal STOwiki settings to have the KDF skin. :) --MatthewM 06:03, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

The thing that buggered me even back when you posted that compilation first on the forums is that you did all this work to gather up quotes and anotations, listed them, and then shot all your work to hell because of the way you expressed yourself there. You cannot sell something as a collection of facts which sounds like an indictment. Some editorial work would have done wonders there. Especially on such an emotional topic like the state of the klingon faction. I hope you don't hate me too much now. --Dukedom 07:44, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

No, I don't hate you. I don't hate anyone. But if my remarks within this list sound like an indictment of Cryptic's actions regarding the KDF, well... that's probably because that's exactly how I feel. - Peregrine Falcon 14:30, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

I say say it like it is or was or can still fall back into, KLingons have fans too. Preach it!--Roach 03:26, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Hey Peregrine_Falcon, this thread (http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=208534) lists you as banned. Is that true? You've been kicked from the forums? What a shame. -- Markonian 19:50, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
Yes I was banned from the forums. Well, that's what happens when you consistently point out problems with the game. - Peregrine Falcon 08:19, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

I don't know with you being Banned if your able to read the forums at all but it's been revealed that in the F2P matrix the KDF Faction is locked at level 25 now. Figured I would inform. --Alastor 17:55, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

I am able to read the forums, but thanks for the heads up! I always appreciate the help. - Peregrine Falcon 10:12, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Some more 'promises' is really happening guys. It's not going to happen over night, but this is one of our next big goals.) --Aoav160 16:52, 07 Sep 2011

This months ask cryptic Dstahl basically confirms that any future costume or ship customization updates will be Micro-transaction only. --Alastor 20:03, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

I've been missing you on the forums Peregrine. The apologists drive me mad nowadays, so I've decided to put a link to your history of the KDF in my signature. Hope to see you on STO someday :P. -bstm300 10:23, 14 September 2011

Thank you for that. I still play STO fairly often. Feel free to send me a friend request. - Peregrine Falcon 17:27, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Tribbles coming back up today, from what we've been told will be in there we have the DOFF system, and the new Fed Tutorial. Haven't seen or read anything regarding KDF content for it yet. However it is just the first test so even I'm not jumping that far to conclusions. Figured I'd give a heads up though.--Alastor 13:53, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

Six new KDF ships are on tribble, double the new Fed ships currently in testing. Though a few are bugged and don't get their abilities.--Alastor 01:39, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

I think you should mention that Michael Dorn's VOs have finally been added to all KDF-storymissions involving Worf. --Akirasensei (talk) 13:09, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

I knew it was coming, but it's not in the patch notes. Surprise! Thanks for the info. - Peregrine Falcon (talk) 13:05, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

Season 5 Info Added

I also renamed "First Anniversary - Silver Age" to "First Anniversary - The Year Of Hell". I think using the title of that particular Voyager episode accurately describes 2011 for Star Trek Online. - Peregrine Falcon 09:47, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

You can still find quotes by user in the STO forums, start your Google search with site:.startrekonline.com or site:sto-forum.perfectworld.com in the search field then enter the other data you are searching for to include user names. The names are still in the web page data but are hidden to the user. Aoav160 10:25, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

KDF Fleetships

Degalus : Hi Peregrine Falcon, I like your work to show what cryptic do to us KDFs. I want to ask if u can add some news to your list. Like the Fed get Fleet- Galaxy, Defiant, Intrepit, Multivector, Armitage *correcting adding* Nebula and get the 1 modul discount and the KDF get Zero Ships with discount. I think thats one of the hardest examples that cryptic torture the KDFs.

Hi Degalus. This list is specifically about the History of the KDF so it wouldn't be appropriate to add any other info/news. However, I think that you should check out this page: Timeline of Star Trek Online - Peregrine Falcon 01:24, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

Degalus: Good Page for the list of ships, shows good what the feds get and we not but dont find the fact that we dont get any discount on our fleetships and Feds get *correcting* 6. That means klings have to pay 20 euro for every fleetship and fed can get an upgrade for 5 euro. I see it from the point of view that we have to pay 20 euro for an charunlock - nonspezialconsole(feds can take the t5 consoles of the cstore version) - no new model(feds got cstore costums). On Fed side u buy the 20 euro cstore version and upgrade it for 5 euro. So u can claim the cstore variant with console every time for every char and only need 1 modul. I think that point are worth for Cryptic's shamefull history with the KDF. Shipfacts are in your history so why this should not be a point? "June 14th, 2012 - Starfleet receives their second carrier, the Armitage class. Meanwhile, still no word on the Hegh'ta Refit, Negh'Var Refit and the Qin Refit that former executive producer Stephen D'Angelo told us was coming back in October 2011."

I wasn't aware of this. If you have a post or screenshot that I can link to that shows that this is the case then I will be happy to include it on my list. As you may have noticed I only include things that can be proven so that nothing on this list is open to debate or accusations of not being true. - Peregrine Falcon 22:22, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

Degalus : No Problem ! I have make many pic and bloglink to prove the truth.

Dev Blog #16 http://sto.perfectworld.com/news/?p=621601

This shows 2 important Infomations

1. Will will not see a discount for cstore ships under T5 (so we have buyed a ship for 15 € and need another 20€ for the Fleet version)

2. They banned the Costums to Fleet Ships and force new players to pay 20 € for a Fleetship to get the Costums. (looks like they recycled costums to make more money and no need to make new fleet models)We also dont get a little discount for owning the costume.

[Links snipped for brevity]

I hope thats is enougth Information ^^ but plz dont copy past this to your list, my english and confusing poststyl isnt so good for your straight and clear List.

ps.: Dont know how to convert this in nice looking format ^^; (have see the text mass after saving) Feel free to edit it to looks clear ^^

No worries. I wish that my German was as good as your English. In any case thank you very much for the information, I've added it to the history. I even found your thread on the forums and linked to it as well. - Peregrine Falcon 01:36, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

Degalus: I m glad that i can help ^^ thx for adding !

Degalus : Little Update with a quote out of ask cryptic august 2012 (http://sto.perfectworld.com/news/?p=634281)

Discussing it internally often means "we think about it ... ask us again in 2 or 3 years" Funny that the exuse is that our ships have no console ability so they are build in abilitys. I played in the time where they convert the ship abilitys of some ships of both sides to consoles why they cant do this again? I dont think that we ever see a other ship that can use multivector console or aplantiv generator console. (They was also build in abilitys before) so they are only there to give them to a similar Version like the Fleet ships. I dont see the reason why our abilitys not can be converted to consoles.

To be fair though Stahl has a point. With their current system how could they make a fleet version of a Zen store ship with their current system? The current system is designed to make you grind for a fleet ship and still pay for the console if you want it, but the KDF Tier 5 ships don't have consoles. - Peregrine Falcon 03:27, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

Degalus: Like i said before, they have changed abilitys to consoles in the past. Whats the differenz to our abilitys? Intrepit Retrofit have the Aplantiv Generator , no other ship can mount it and it was a build in ability before. Now the Fleetships comes out the only new ship that can mount the console is also the intrepit only with the "fleet" infront of the name.

My question is: Why they dont convert our abilitys to consoles like the other abilitys? whats the exuse that our b'rel dont get the enhanced cloak console? because we lose a consolslot? i dont think so , they dont care the lose of a console slot in the past on all ships they converted build in ability to a console so whats the reason?

And i found a funny thing again : the Ka'fi Carrier HAVE his ability in a console so why this thing is not a Fleet ship? The reason: Vo'quv gives more money because its not a Cstore ship.

Re: Romulan faction

Regarding your recent addition, you sort of unwittingly exaggerated how significant the whole "choosing sides" thing is. From the Ask Cryptic: "Romulans still continue their own independent mission journal and storyline after this choice, remaining neutral within the Romulan faction, but the choice has an impact on their progression towards end-game.". So they still have full 1-50 mission content, but the choice just impacts their endgame content and Fleet system.

Sorry to nitpick, but considering how often people cite your page, I just though I should say something. Keep up the good work! - Mitchz95 21:29, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, Dstahl made it clear that the Romulans have a seperate 1-50 leveling experience. The ONLY thing they will NOT have for the time being is a seperate fleet starbase. Instead you will have to choose your "ally" (ie FED or KDF) and then your Romulan character can either join FED or KDF fleets OR set up his/her own fleet, which will then, however, build a FED or KDF base. Rommies will then also have access to ESD -or- First City, but still retain their own Romulan-only social hub (probably finished city on New Romulus). So, the Rommies will have access to more social hubs thatn a standard FED or KDF character. The remaining questions is: Will the KDF get their missing ~20 KDF-specific story missions?!?! --Akira-sensei 22:57, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
I want to thank you both very much for pointing out my mistake, which I have now corrected. My primary goal for this page is for it to contain provably correct information. Contrary to some people's beliefs I do not maintain this timeline as an attack on Cryptic. I simply want to keep a record of the truth so that people aren't able to rewrite history. - Peregrine Falcon 07:41, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
So, if the primary storyline missions for all factions are rescaled so that your character is lvl 40 upon completing them (for the rommies, all the undine/borg/breen-specific story missions are NOT included in the "primary" storyline according to cryptic - remains to be seen what that means for the KDF), we're only talking about 10 levels worth of KDF-specific story content that is needed. They are "revamping" the Klingon tutorial, so that may then be structured similarly to the current FED tutorial (which hopefully gets revamped itself), i.e. 5 missions for that. Depending on how much they re-adjust the skill points earned per mission, we might actually not get more than ~5 new Klingon story missions or even none at all other than a new turorial. I think that's very much possible if not even likely. --Akira-sensei 15:28, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Primetime UGC 29

You might be interested in Al Rivera's remarks on the Klingon faction in Primetime UGC 29: http://youtu.be/ADhhw2Rh3YY (jump to 34 min, 16 s). Despite the mission revamps, addition of early content, Michael Dorn and all the other voice overs, giveaways, the Mogh Cruiser... Percentage of KDF players went up by just a small amount. --Akirasensei (talk) 12:27, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Thank you very much for the info. I find it interesting, but not surprising, that what Geko said confirms what I wrote for the Fourth Anniversary intro over a week ago. - Peregrine Falcon (talk) 07:40, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
I am curious. What else could be done do permanently increase the Klingon player base? I don't accept the explanation that the fan base is just smaller. Similar things were said when WoW launched and no one wanted to play Horde. Two years later the Alliance player base was SMALLER than the Horde's. Just pumping out more Cryptic-designed KDF ships (Klingon, Lethean designs etc.) would not do the trick I think. All canon KDF ships are already out there (except the D5 and the old BoP from Enterprise). Is the Hub, i.e., First City not good enough? I think it's WAYYYY cooler and immersive than Earth Space Dock. Ganalda Station is lacking, but so is K7 (both of which have become redundant in the game anyways). The KDF storyline missions are now in a very good shape (in contrast to the FED missions). Maybe not quite as superb and connected as the Romulan missions, but certainly of very good quality, immersion and storytelling. Sure, Klingons need WAY more costume and hairstyle options... But can that cause a 70%:30% imbalance? The underdeveloped melee-combat system might contribute. After all, this is a Klingon "specialty", but the only of so many "cool" and C-Store-able Klingon blade weapons in the game is the bat'leth... What are your thoughts? --Akirasensei (talk) 22:21, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

That's a lot of different points. Let's see if I can hit them all.

  • Honestly I don't think there's anything that the developers can do, at this point, to increase the KDF player base.
  • You may not accept that explanation, but it's true. Less people are interested in the KDF. Most Trekkies fantasize about being their favorite Star Fleet captain.
  • WoW and the Horde aren't the same thing. No one cared about the IP at launch. People will play whichever side has the coolest armor, or stories, or quests.
  • IF STO had launched with 2 full factions then MAYBE the KDF would have been popular enough with people to have a much larger base. Probably not larger than the Feds, but possibly close to parity. Both the Horde in WoW, and the Empire in SWTOR, are proof that Cryptic's repeated claim that "no one wants to play bad guys" is just wrong and stupid. Oh yeah, and Grand Theft Auto.
  • "The underdeveloped melee combat system?" I think specializing in melee weapons in the 25th century is stupid. There's a reason that US Marines only have decorative swords on their dress uniforms and don't carry actual swords on the battlefield.

Face it. Cryptic doesn't care about the KDF, the Romulans, or even the Feds. They only care about money, and if it doesn't make them money they ain't doing it. That's why we keep getting grindy adventure zones and no new star trek story content. - Peregrine Falcon (talk) 02:51, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Not necessarily NO trek content, but certainly not much... Most of their Dev time is used to design ships and repeatable "content". Well, STO was conceptualized as a space-combat game and since F2P, starships are STO's main business model (quoting the Dan Stahl and Gecko here). That's all nice and dandy. The F2P model STO uses is... acceptable. More acceptable than all the other mdels I know. Would I prefer a subscription based game? Perhaps, cuz' I am not sure this would automatically mean more trek-story content and less grind.
About the melee combat: Good point, BUT: 1) Thou shalt not play the logic card in MMOs :p Melee combat may seem out of place in the 25th century, but I do not have to remind you of the many occassions when melee combat was part of a trek show... 2) I was not necessarily refering to open world melee slaughtering, but to a) melee only PvP arenas, b) melee only PvE events, c) melee only storyline missions. The are tons of situations you could easily create in order to explain a melee only fight in canon. However, even the Bat'leth tournament mission can be done with ranged weapons -.-
Generally, I think you're right, it is too late now. The way STO is NOW, is the way it should have been released 4 years ago (perhaps minus the Romulan faction). Then it might have been possible to develop to quantitatively comparable factions. But as things are now, maybe it is the best thing to end the FED-KDF war (i.e., only cross-faction PvP, cross-faction grouping everywhere, cross-faction fleet-alliances) and call it good. Cross-faction PvP, now that's really tough to explain in a satisfying way within the established universe... --Akirasensei (talk) 11:12, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
