The U.S.S. Thunderchild is a Thunderchild-class Escort and prototype of her class. She is named for the U.S.S. Thunderchild, an Akira-class starship that fought in the Battle of Sector 001 in 2373.
The Thunderchild was among the first Starfleet vessels assigned to combat the Borg in Gamma Orionis. During this time, her commanding officer, Captain Varney, was assimilated by the Borg. While the crew of the Thunderchild was eventually able to rescue Captain Varney, the emotional toll led to Varney retiring from Starfleet, and the remainder of the senior staff being reassigned to other posts.
Following her commission, the Thunderchild is the representative of her class in the ship selection screen.
