They have innate abilities that allow them to upgrade their directed energy weapons attempt to render the targeted subsystem offline temporarily. These abilities, however, carry a large cooldown, and can backfire on the player by increasing the regular recharge time of the weapon that fired the shot. Given science vessels' strong shields, they generally have the weaker hulls compared to other starship types of the same tier, although this can be improved with the relevant skills. Their Bridge officer seating allows the slotting of a Commander-level Science Bridge officer ability and generally several others, giving them access to a wide variety of Control, Drain, and Exotic damage abilities. This allows Science Vessels to perform a variety of roles, from crowd control to debuffing, to focusing on AoE or spike damage, or even support and tanking. Science Vessels are also a popular platform for builds utilizing Torpedo Launchers, particularly Exotic damage torpedoes. While most Science Vessels have 3 forward and aft weapons slots and no hangar bay, there are a number of Science Vessels sub-types with more weapon slots or different weapon slot arrangements, or other special features, which are listed to the right and shown below in the Table of all Science Vessels. At Tier 5-U and Tier 6, all Science Vessels, Multi-Mission Science Vessels, Science Dreadnoughts and Science Destroyers use the same Science Vessel Starship Mastery package. Scout Ships, Science Carriers and Science Carrier Warbirds have their own unique Mastery packages. To date, all Science Vessels, including all the sub-types, have 3 device slots except one: the Tier 1 Oberth Class Light Science Vessel, which only has 2. ===Subsystem Targeting=== PAGENAMEs come with built-in Subsystem Targeting abilities. These built-in abilities stay at Rank I and do not automatically rank up when acquiring higher tier Science starships. They are separate from Subsystem Targeting abilities gained through Tactical Space Bridge officer abilities. * Target Auxiliary Subsystems Target Auxiliary Subsystems * Target Weapons Subsystems Target Weapons Subsystems * Target Engines Subsystems Target Engines Subsystems * Target Shields Subsystems Target Shields Subsystems Activating a subsystem targeting ability will upgrade all energy weapons to inflict a stacking power drain on the foe's targeted subsystem for the next 10 seconds. They will also have a small chance to knock the targeted subsystem offline for a short duration. ===Sensor Analysis=== * Sensor Analysis Sensor Analysis Sensor Analysis is a toggled ability which can be used on any hostile or a friendly target within range, but the Science Vessel cannot target itself. It has only a brief cooldown (5 seconds), but it can only affect one target at a time. It will remain active indefinitely until manually toggled off. The sensor lock will also be broken if the targeted vessel moves out of sensor range (10 km), Placates the Science Vessel (such as with Jam Sensors, or is destroyed. If Sensor Analysis is toggled or forced off, all stacks granting bonus damage/drain or healing will be lost and must be gained all over again. When used on a hostile target, it grants a +5% bonus to damage and power drain against that target; this is achieved through a reduction in the target's damage and drain resistance. The latter bonus is meant to complement the power drain of the Science Vessel's innate subsystem targeting, but will affect other power draining abilities as well. These bonuses will increase by an additional 5% every 3 seconds until achieving a maximum of 6 stacks for a total of +30% damage and drain. Additionally, at 6 stacks, the target suffers a 50% reduction to all incoming heals. When used on a friendly target, that target receives a bonus of +5% per stack to all shield and hull healing effects received. Again, this bonus increases by 5% every 3 seconds until reaching 6 stacks for a total of +30% healing. ===Secondary Deflector=== Main article: Secondary Deflector Science vessels may equip a Secondary Deflector to further enhance their science skills. Secondary Deflectors of very rare quality and above will further enhance their innate sensor analysis or subsystem targeting abilities specifically.
