Starfleet has lost contact with the U.S.S. Romero, a ship that was refitted with an experimental sensor array to map the Badlands. The player's mission is to find out what happened to it.

Synopsis

An incoming call from Starfleet sends the player to Deep Space 9 to meet with Commander Birkner on Shuttlebay 2. After the U.S.S. Romero has disappeared, a runabout was sent out from DS9 to check on the ship, but it has disappeared, too. Commander Birkner is responsible for shuttle traffic on DS9 and helps the player with the search by providing him with logs and the last transmissions of the runabout. When the player checks the logs, he discovers the last known location of the runabout.

Once arrived in the Badlands, the player discovers a communications satellite, which has been modified to send a message. After the player has listened to it, the player's science officer picks up traces of federation alloys in the area. Eventually, the player finds the missing runabout and the last log entries of Lieutenant Commander Telkor, the leader of the search party. Tracing back the path on which the runabout drifted, the player finds the U.S.S. Romero in a nebula, next to a derelict federation ship. The sensors pick up many lifesigns on board the U.S.S. Romero, but no one is answering the player's hails. Although the Romero's warp core is about to go critical due to the damaging effects in the nebula, the player beams down to get as many survivors as possible off the ship.

Upon arrival aboard the U.S.S. Romero, the player notices that the crew has been "altered". They feast on dead crewmen and the player can not communicate with them. The science officers is reading some unaltered life signs in a cargo bay on the same deck, just down the hallway of the storage room where the player beamed down. In the cargo bay are four survivors who are still alive. they saved themselves by erecting a force field. Zombies are pounding and kicking at the force field and try to break it. The player has to clear the cargo bay and lower the force field to talk to the survivors.

Outline

Mission text

<rank>, we received an urgent message from Starfleet. One of our ships has gone missing in the Badlands. Deep Space Nine dispatched a runabout to check the situation, but it has disappeared, too.

The ship is the U.S.S. Romero, a Nebula class starship which was sent out to test an experimental sensor array for mapping the Badlands. DS9 was monitoring the sensor data until we lost contact, and it is currently being analysed there. Captain Kurland has offered to help us with our search. We should go to the Shuttlebay first, to check the logs of the runabout. The chief of shuttlebay operations, Commander Birkner, will help us there.
