Outcome

Extremely profitable: The haggling proved extremely profitable, and your representative was able to engineer a superior bargain.

Profitable: Trade negotiations proved moderately profitable, and your representative was able to arrange an adequate exchange.

Unprofitable: The haggling went extremely poorly, and the exchange your representative agreed upon was indeed a bargain - for those you were trading with.

Ambushed!: The entire exchange was a trap! Ambushed and set upon, all of your trade goods were lost!

Notes

This assignment is best suited to Ferengi players. Using the Ferengi 20% energy credit discount and only buying trade commodities from Specialized Commodities Brokers will maximize the player's profit margins. With both discounts, even an Unprofitable result yields a modest return on EC investment (though the XP, expertise and dilithium rewards are only paid on Profitable or better results.)

It also meshes well with Assignment: Trade for commodity, as Profitable results from those assignments can yield a per-unit cost even lower than the Ferengi buyer/Specialized seller combo described above, allowing a savvy player to push margins even higher.

Also note that while the assignment indicates the use of Operations or Civilian duty officers (including, but not limited to, Quartermaster and Trader) to improve the chances of a Profitable outcome, this is not actually true (they may be assigned, but do not improve the chance).
