Summary[ | ]
Of all Terran specific tech, Agony is perhaps the most infamous. The application of torture has been a dark art for much of history, but here it has become a science. How is it that one singular mechanism has replaced the endless and varied depravity normally used by the blackhearted? How do repeat victims not become used to it? Is it possible to immunize ourselves?
Variations[ | ]
This assignment is part of the Research Assignment - Terran Empire Research chain.
Requires[ | ]
- 1 x [Terran Empire Research Assignment - Agony Report Industrial Torture]
- 4 x Any Officer (except Prisoner)
- Breakthrough!: Doctor, Emotional, Systems Engineer, Unscrupulous
Outcome[ | ]
Final outcome: Success
Similar to signal jamming or shield harmonics, the Agony process is one of wide bursts of chaotic energy concealing subtle and endless modulation. Agonizers defeat most sapients' neural acclimation by varying the negative stimulus, but it is not random — rather, it follows an endless series of almost-patterns, stimulating and thwarting pattern recognition in order to prevent the subject's dissociation from its sensory experiences.
Final outcome: Breakthrough!
Your team found broader insight in the history of Agony tech. Torturers were once prized, but Terran science made them obsolete. Sadism was downgraded to a class C mental benefit. Certain Terran scientists have demonstrated total immunity to Agony, but the mechanism is not yet known. Many were executed when they proved unhelpful in understanding their condition, but more of them simply vanished from official record.
