My mistake[edit source]

Was using your Ore template to try and make a template for Refined Dilithium but got sidetracked + brain lost and almost screwed yours up. I believe I returned it to normal though but I wanted to inform you since your the author. Many many apologies if I crossed a line.

--BinaryOutlaw 16:19, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

Don't worry about it; everyone makes mistakes. Smiley.png The full history of each article is tracked, so you cant break anything. In fact I would encourage you to edit things pro-actively, otherwise nothing gets done! If you look at the history for some of the templates I've been working on, you'll see I've made all sorts of errors that break large sections of the wiki, but sometimes thats the only way to try things out.
FYI I also made a template for refined dilithium at {{Dil}}, but feel free to make changes if you have any ideas. I see you've been tracking the new costs of things in Dilithum on your user page. Please dont be afraid to update these on the main wiki articles; this is valuable information and we always need more active contributors. --Zutty 16:30, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

Ship pages[edit source]

Welcome to STOwiki! I like the work you've done on the ship template. I think the graphical approach makes things a little easier to digest. Keep up the good work! --MatthewM 18:48, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, I really appreciate that. I'm going to do the Klingon ships next but I need to adapt the artwork. Klingon pips are harder to draw! Zutty 22:01, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
Klingon pips can be found in Rank article. --MatthewM 06:40, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

--Nice work on the new templates. I'm liking what you're doing.--Curmudgeony 02:38, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks very much. --Zutty 04:52, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

I like what you did with Template:Playable ship nav. Great work! --MatthewM 07:23, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

In terms of categorization, how do you see the Starfleet Starships (and also starships in general) organizational chart working, both in terms of meta organizing how the classes/tiers are categorized and also as how specific ships are categorized? I'm noticing some category duplication, and I don't want to go hard charging in and muck up something you're working on, by not seeing the ultimate shape you're creating. By the same token I love organizing things and sliding everything into nice neat little boxes and sub boxes that each cross-reference each other. So why don't we cross collaborate? Feel free to PM me--Curmudgeony 19:02, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi Curmudgeony. My main goal is to make the distinction between playable ships and non-playable ships more clear. I've already done plenty of work on playable ships, and now I want to attack NPCs. This will split onto two parts; first is the organisation of ship types, and then the organisation of specific, named ships.
Federation NPC ship types should be organized by the very small number of broad types that the game actually spawns. You'll note that ever Cruiser has the same abilities and the same hull strength. I want the wiki to refelct this. The types are...
    • Critter Rank 0 icon.png Runabout etc... (are peregrine fighters/type 8 shuttlecraft the same but with a different model???)
    • Critter Rank 1 icon.png Frigate
    • Critter Rank 2 icon.png Escort
    • Critter Rank 2 icon.png Cruiser
    • Critter Rank 2 icon.png Science Vessel
    • Critter Rank 3 icon.png Battleship
    • Critter Rank 4 icon.png Dreadnought
Unfortunately there are like 1,000,000 different ship models and each has its own name (Miranda Class Frigate, Excelsior Class Cruiser, Nova Class Science Vessel, Prometheus Class Escort, etc...). At the moment I'm thinking I'll create a redirect for each individual name and link them to the Escort/Cruiser/Sci Vessel pages. There should probably be a 'Variants' section in each of those articles, but its going to be a big job.
I plan to re-organize named Federation NPC ships by their NPC ship type, rather than playable ship type. Im not sure yet whether this should be done by broad categories (e.g. USS Felczer is an 'Escort'), or narrow ones (USS Felczer is a 'Hephaestus Class Escort').
Finally I want to standardise all ship type pages for every faction so they have a similar format. We should probably have some way to broadly categorize ship across factions. It seems every faction has frigates, cruisers (inc escorts, science vessels), battleships, and dreadnoughts, so this would be a good angle to look at it.
I want to create a new ship info pane (like the one I made for playable ships), and long term I want each faction to have a Nav that will include ship types (and maybe a small selection of notable named ships). That's long term though.
It would be great to work together on this one, as there's no way I can finish all this on my own! Let me know your suggestions.
Thanks --Zutty 22:41, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
(Wall of text crits you for 100,000 damage!)

Guide: Shields[edit source]

Great work! Keep it coming.

Regards, --RachelGarrett 09:34, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! I intend to; the article needs a bit more polish yet. --Zutty 04:52, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
Will you be updating this to reflect the changes to shield capacity with Season Four? --MatthewM 10:14, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

Invite[edit source]

Hi Zutty,
would you be interested in becoming a new admin to stowiki? We think you have a good sense of what we consider good practice and could certainly use a hand, when it comes to keeping the front page up-to-date, moving/renaming articles, and stuff like that. So if you are interested, please leave me a short note.
--RachelGarrett 00:25, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Oh, cool! Yes I'd be delighted. Thanks Rachel. --Zutty 09:00, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
Done. Congratulations :-) --RachelGarrett 09:35, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Star Trek Online Canon[edit source]

Hi Zutty,

I agree with you about the clear differentiation of STO-canon and Star Trek-canon and I admit that the persons/ships/etc. I recently added do not appear in-game (besides verbal references). However, the articles I wrote are based on STO-licensed media: "The Path to 2409" from Cryptic's Star Trek Online webiste [1] and "The Path to 2409" from the novel "Star Trek Online: The Needs of the Many". I do not include info from either Memory Alpha or Beta. In August 2010 I've asked User:RachelGarrett whether to use the "Path" info or not, and she allowed it - see here, please: Project_talk:Community_Portal/Archive02#Inclusion_of_Path_to_2409_into_pages. According to the STO Wiki Policy, information from the official website is part of STO-Canon. If you still regard these sources as not-game-related enough, I will refrain from using them and focus more on in-game-info. However, I would like to hear the thoughts of another Admin on whether the Path-agreement (about using Path-to-2409-info where it is appropriate) from RachelGarrett and me from August 2010 is stil valid or not.

Zutty, I want you to know that I do not feel alienated, and thank you for not deleting the articles I've edited. Markonian 15:43, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Hmmm. Yes I think we need to hear from another admin on this one. I'd like to know RachelGarret's thoughts. Its fair enough to document the 'path to 2409' stuff in the wiki, and I can see why you've organised it the way you have. Personally I would have kept it all in a single article rather than spread over multiple articles. I suppose the issue I have is that the articles on STO lore dont have anything distinguishing them from actual STO in-game content, which is a bit misleading in my opinion. This seems to be a bit of a gray area. Will wait for opinions before proceeding. --Zutty 18:05, 15 March 2011 (UTC)
Hi people, just my (absolutely non-binding) two cents: The path to 2409 and "The Needs of the Many" should be integral part of the wiki imho. E.g. I think it is very sound to add info from it to Sela, etc. I do not know, however, if we really need to create individual articles for anything not seen or at least referenced in-game, but in my opinion it has not come to that, yet. Finally, we all have our hobby-horses. I really don't like to tell community members what to spend their time on. I was very reluctant to add the "Under Construction" section on the main page and don't want to be or become the ultimate authority on anything. With that in mind, I think the articles are fine they way Markonian created and edited them. I can see Zutty's point, and there is nothing preventing us from creating a sub-section or template in the "History" sections of any article to separate game-info from Pt2409/TNotM-info. Best regards, --RachelGarrett 22:05, 19 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply Cpt. Garrett. Your viewpoint sounds perfectly reasonable to me, though I'd still like to keep the template in place showing which articles refer to stuff that isn't in-game. It should probably be re-worded so it reads less like those articles are wrong or incorrect. Sorry for all this fuss Markonian, but I wanted us all to be clear before you went any further! --Zutty 02:57, 21 March 2011 (UTC)
This viewpoint sits well with me, too. I'd also like to keep the template-tagging of non-in-game stuff. I suggest to tag articles about to referenced/mentioned only stuff which is not based in Star Trek canon, too, e.g. Aennik Okeg or Melani D'ian. Zutty, thank you for the level-headed discussion. --Markonian 12:06, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

outdated wiki pages[edit source]

Hi Zutty,

I noticed there are still a lot outdated pages from the 'old' crafting system around. As you are on a prowl lately would you mind removing those? Should be all that upgrade:item yada yady crap. --Dukedom 13:10, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

AH! I thought those upgrade pages were out of date! Sure, I get rid of the old pages, though it might take a little time! I'll delete all the pages with the title 'Upgrade: ...'. If there are any other pages, please mark them with {{delete}}. --Zutty 13:23, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Comment[edit source]

Hi Zutty, thank you. There is indeed something you could help me: the NPCshipinfo template. There are things I'd like to see added but I rather not mess with it myself. NPCs are able to display their level (level = ...) and their pips (pips = ..) , which would be useful for ships, too. In addition, a "class2 = ..." option would help fitting in ships with varying classes (such as the U.S.S. Kirk) better. You help would be greatly appreciated. --Markonian 10:16, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Done. Hope the new fields work for you. I also added 'Status'. I wanted something similar to the 'Born' & 'Died' from the NPCinfo template, but felt this was more appropriate to starships. If you have any comments, let me know. Enjoy! --Zutty 17:20, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, it's perfect! --Markonian 05:10, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Thankies, meow![edit source]

Hi Zutty, thankies for working so hard on the item icon layers to add all Mk-level variants! As far as I could see, all space items such as shield arrays, deflector arrays, energy weapons torpedoes and mines ... they are already fully converted to Mk XI and XII and also previous Mk numbers (Plasma IV and higher, Tetryon / Chroniton VI and higher, Polaron / Transphasic VIII and higher, Antiproton / Tricobalt X and higher). You are really quick! Do you think you can do the same for all of the ground shields, armors and weapons? I'd luv to see that happening. :) ErisTheVorta 16:03, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Nice work on the BORF template! I'm glad we have you onboard. --MatthewM 03:09, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

See Also on the device page[edit source]

Sorry to revert you edit. Since the "why did you do this" is limited I figured I'd elaborate here. You are right, they aren't devices, but I have a reason for adding them here. The reason I added those non-devices to the ship devices page under the See Also heading was that those particular items shared some similar traits with the other actual ship devices, so it was a form of cross-categorization within the article itself. Someone might go looking for them and think "oh they aren't 'console consoles' maybe they are a device." But putting their links here they can go to find them in the right spot.

Also as a quick aside, nice work on the image for the light phaser satellite, Thanks for figuring out how to make it bigger and iconizing it. I'm not quite sure how to do what you did. The image looks much nicer now than the one I capped--Curmudgeony 06:37, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

File move/deletion[edit source]

Hi Zutty, I've uploaded some images, making the file "File:Fer'Jai Frigate.png" obsolete. Could you please delete it? Furthermore, I've accidentally typo'ed an image title, but I can't move it, though. The file is currently called "File:Fer'Jai Frigate suqadron.jpg" and meant to be called "File:Fer'jai Frigate squadron.jpg", so I mixed the q/u in "squadron" up. Thanks in advance. --Markonian 15:30, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

I noticed this and took care of both. You can request deletion just by putting {{speedydelete}} on a page, even for an image file. Looks like we're missing a move template... I'll whip one of those up tomorrow. Eyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 18:41, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, Eyes! <Speedydelete>, I'll keep that im mind. A "Move" button would be useful, indeed. -- Markonian 08:30, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Star system[edit source]

If you really wanted to nitpick, you should change those to "planetary systems", since a star system is actually a group of stars that orbit each other. (Don't you just hate astronomers? :p) Eyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 10:29, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Damn, you're right! Damn these correct terms for things ;) --Zutty 11:43, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Change to missioninfo template[edit source]

I used AutoWikiBrowser to more or less automatically change the faction parameter to "Both" for all pages that were in Category:Generic missions. I did it under my bot account, so it doesn't show up on recent changes unless you click "Show bots." Eyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 13:32, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

Oh, sweet! I didn't even know that was possible!! Thanks man :) --Zutty 14:07, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

Feedback[edit source]

Hello! I want to thank you for everything you have done for the Star Trek Online Wiki. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Tesla, a wiki manager for Curse. The reason I am posting on your talk page is for some feedback. I was hoping you could tell me if there was something you would like to see on the wiki or if you think there is something we could do to help improve the quality of our service to the community. If you have any ideas at all, please feel free to stop by on my talk page and leave me your thoughts. Thank you! DjTesla 10:19, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Patrolling[edit source]

Hello. I'd like to get your opinion on changing our settings to make the patrolling features of MediaWiki actually useful for our small wiki situation. I give specifics here. Eyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 10:44, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

Email[edit source]

It occurred to me that I should probably be sending copies of the emails I send Curse to all of the active admins. I don't have an email address to send you anything, though. I fully understand if you don't want to post it publicly (I prefer not to post mine either), but I've finally got wiki email set up, so you can send it to me that way, if you don't mind. Eyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 07:41, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

Ah, cool. I've confirmed my email address, and sent you the address. --Zutty 11:05, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

Template edits[edit source]

Could you update the documentation on that template changes, too? Not everyone is fluent in wikicode. And while you're at it can you take a look at {{traiticon}} as well? Afaik it needs a doff/boff parameter as well. --Dukedom 18:10, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Oh yes, apologies. I always forget these things! I've done the documentation, and I'll have a look at the {{traiticon}} now. Cheers. --Zutty 18:25, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
Hmmm, do you actually need {{traiticon}} to work for doffs? There is already {{Dofftraiticontextlink}} that User:Eyes wrote that seems to do the trick, and it would be a bit hacky to shoe-horn doff icons into the other template. --Zutty 18:36, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
I just stumbled earlier today upon traiticon when fixing some Efficient links, maybe someone can merge those two templates? --Dukedom 18:46, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
I'd rather not merge them, given {{dofftraiticontextlink}}'s use in semantic queries that produce large tables. It's getting called a lot on pages like Trait: Resilient/doff, so better that it has to support one type of trait. Keeps it lighter weight. Eyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 18:57, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Playable ship navigation changes[edit source]

in the C-Store they're explicitly referred to names as "Pach Raptor Refit", "K't'inga Battle Cruiser Refit", etc. This is more clear that they're arguably superior versions to the other ones rather than just "different" (like Assault Cruiser vs Star Cruiser). I'd recommend going back to the names that were there before. Thoughts? --MatthewM 02:14, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Hmmm, good point. I was going by the names in the Ship Requisitions UI, but that does seem to conflict with thats in the C-Store. --Zutty 13:40, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Property:Has boff station[edit source]

First off, nice work on the ship type semantics. As you've already noticed, there's going to be a bit of a problem with this property. SMW is designed to ignore any attempts to add a value to a property that already exists for a given page, so there isn't a way to add, say, Ensign Tactical twice for that property.

If you get rid of the Allows value restrictions, you could literally assign the comma-separated list to the property. It'd pretty much destroy the property's value as something to query by, but it'd work fine as a query result. If you want to preserve the ability to query for ships with a specific boff station, then I suggest this:

  • Make Property:Has boff stations be the display property that just stores the comma-separated list as a single value. The string type is probably fine for it, but since it'd worthless as a property to query by anyway, you could go with the text type and be in no danger of running into the length limit.
  • Assign the individual boff stations one at a time to Property:Has boff station, keeping it with the current type and restrictions. Note that you have to do this in separate steps to get SMW to treat it as separate values, which you can probably do inside the #arraymap.

I wish SMW had more flexibility in letting you decide what to do with lists in properties; it'd eliminate more than a few headaches, but until they improve it, there's often crude workarounds like what I've suggested to get it to cooperate. Eyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 20:00, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks very much Eyes. That's a brilliant suggestion, I think I'll go with that. This is something I've wanted to do for a while but didn't know how. Thank you very very much for having SMW installed :) --Zutty 21:23, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Noob needs help was pointed in your direction[edit source]

Hi Zutty im new to wiki's but noticed there was no page for Rare Borg Shield Tech so I made one but im having a problem and was pointed in your direction by the in game chat channel. Problem im having is I cant get a good enough picture of the icon to post here. Ive tried but they all look terrible compared to say the icon for Rare Borg Salvage. Please can you help

Hi Angelus. Thanks for adding the article. Yeah I can get the original icon from the game's files, but to be honest with you I dont know what it looks like! I haven't actually gotten around to playing the new STFs since season 5 came out, and I didnt play on Tribble, so I haven't seen any Borg tech! If you can take a screenshot of it in your inventory (upload here or on any image host), it would give me something to go on. Thanks --Zutty 18:02, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
(P.S. dont forget to sign your posts; just type ~~~~ and the wiki will expand it to your username and the date you posted.)

Hi Zutty, I saw you found and updated the image for me, appreciate it muchly. I then noticed you also found the deflector and engine too so I made the corresponding pages too. Rare Borg Engine Tech ----- Rare Borg Deflector Tech. Could you give them the once over since I'm new. Thanks Angelus214 23:56, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
Looks good to me. Do we have any idea of the drop rates? Might be good to have that info there. Thanks again for the contributions. --Zutty 01:56, 15 January 2012 (UTC)
*cackles madly* Just write something like 'you will get it between now and the heat death of the universe' --Dukedom 10:27, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Skin stuff[edit source]

I sent some emails to your gmail account regarding modifying the skin, including giving you access to the sandbox wiki to let you play around. Let me know if you have any problems. Eyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 18:55, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Yes, thanks for that Eyes. I shall work on my proposed changes there so they can be reviewed. --Zutty 01:54, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

How do I do this?[edit source]

I was thinking of a template that takes 3 or 4 parameters and calls an existing template that uses 2 fixed parameters.

Like {{newtemplate|a|b|c|d}} gives me {{oldtemplate|a|b}}, {{oldtemplate|a|c}}, {{oldtemplate|a|d}}, {{oldtemplate|b|c}}, {{oldtemplate|b|d}}, {{oldtemplate|c|d}}.

Somehow when I look at existing templates there are enough {{{{{{{{ and }}}}}}}}}} to confuse the heck out of me. :P --Dukedom 09:57, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Cutting the Cord screencapture[edit source]

Sorry to bother you sir, but could you please explain how you were able to take the Iconian towing screen shot from the mission when the cutscenes have the ship in the distance? Also do you have any other Iconian ship screencaptures? Or know where else I could look for them? My own ingame capture ability is poor and I need as many asp ossible for the 3d model I'm attempting. 15:18, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Its no bother :) The trick to getting good screenshots is using demorecord. While in the mission you record a demo. Simply type the demorecord command into the chat window. You'll see a red "DEMO RECORDING" message on the left side of the screen while its recording. When you then play the demo back (its much easier to do this with the demo launcher tool), you can move the camera to wherever you like (press F2 while in demo playback mode), allowing you to get really close to whatever subject you like, and get good angles/composition. Action shots (I'm particularly pleased with this one!) would be impossible without demorecord.
It was quite hard to get the screenshot of the Iconian ship as its a very awkward shape and it has a particle effect giving the purple glow. In “Cutting the Cord” the hard-point for the tractor beam is at the front of the ship, so the beam itself passes through the geometry of the ship, which is unfortunate. If you want to get more shots of the iconian ship, try “The Return” (assuming you are high enough level), as it is around for longer and doesnt move so much.
If you need any more advice or help, please feel free to ask. :) --Zutty 16:06, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Templates Playableshipsbytyperow & Bofficon[edit source]

Hi, could you please alter Template:Playableshipsbytyperow so that it allows for costunits Lobi Crystal icon.png, Stalwart icon.png and Fleet Credits?

Could you also set the space between the BOff-icons to zero in Template:Bofficon? I've already decreased their default size, but could still take less space in order for the ship tables to be more handy (and still readable).

The goal is a table like this: Starship_tier_chart#Provided_information , which I created manually...

In general we want to combine/delete most of the various articles on starships. See also this discussion: Talk:Playable starship.

Your help would be most appreciated!!! --Akira-sensei 15:29, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Akira-sensei. Have you tried it? TBH I havent tried it myself so I'm not saying definitely it does work, but it should! Just specify costunit=LC, veteran , or FC. All the template does is put curly braces around whatever string you specify in costunit. --Zutty 12:06, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Me and User:Karika already solved some of the issues wrt the ship lists (e.g., the new currencies, smaller font etc.). I will also try to tackle most of the organizational end editorial tasks you've outlined, but I still need some technical assistance on the following issues:

  • Template:Playableshipsbytype and Template:Playableshipsbyquery both do NOT accept any faction-parameter, i.e. it is not possible to display a list of ALL klingon or ALL starfleet vessels (at least that option is apparently not working). Also, is there a parameter option to EXCLUDE certain types, i.e. small craft?
  • The sort by rank function in the lists seems to be screwed up somehow.
  • I've added device slots and impulse speed as values to both templates, but neither displays the values in the respective columns (e.g., see the list on Small craft).
  • Someone skilled (i.e. you?^^) needs to add the option of specifying MULTIPLE classifications for 1. ship type (e.g., Catian Atrox is BOTH a science vessel AND a carrier) and 2. cost & costunit (the new fleet ships cost fleet credits Fleet Credits AND fleet ship modules Fleet Ship Module icon.png - both currencies should be listed on the ship articles and in the list-templates, either in a row or below each other).

Thanks!!! --Akira-sensei 13:01, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Zutty,

Apologies this isnt Wiki related but i have a question about your game file extracting abilities. I know you can get the icons and such for items but are you able to pull 3D texture files? I know what your thinking and no I dont intend use them in a game or something plagerising (not smart enough to program anyway) but I really need some of the 3D texture files for a devious plan of mine (imagine evil laugh here). Can you help? totally understand if you cant. If you need more information please let me know and ill provide you my RW email. thanks Angelus214 23:23, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

Extracting Item Icons[edit source]

Hi Zutty,

I was wondering where in the game files (I assume one of the .hogg files) the icons for items are being kept. I'm trying to make the pages for Polarized Disruptors, but I can't seem to be able to get a clean enough screenshot of the icons (it doesn't help that since I don't have the items, I need to ask others). I know how to extract, but I don't know where to look. If you want to extract them yourself, they look like disruptor weapons, except they have purple accents (e.g, the pol-dis beam array has green sides, but the energy in the center is purple). Also, I am trying to find icons for Phased Tetryon weapons, assuming they are not identical in appearance to normal tetryon weapons (I think they may look like tetryon, but with a green/teal tinge to the blue accents on tetryons).

Thanks, AndroidAR 15:33, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
