What are you planning for the forums? A discussion page, or a real forum. I have the domain STOForum.org, and a forum there I did last night on my forum hosting service. Hey, listen, if you're not going to be around much, that's fine, but I need some access to edit pages like Project_talk:Current_events. Also, to delete pages would be good. I'm currently looking into how to set user permissions and settings in the MediaWiki environment, which isn't easy. It's like they purposefully made it impossible to do. But trust me, you'll get full admin (sysops) power once I figure out how. –TerranRich {haillog} 00:02, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

STOWiki namespace[edit source]

If you add the following to LocalSettings.php, we can use the prefix STOWiki instead of Project.

$wgExtraNamespaces[100] = "STOWiki";
$wgExtraNamespaces[101] = "STOWiki_talk";

That should work, unless of course you have already added custom namespaces, then you already know what to do. If you want those pages to be counted as articles, then add:

$wgContentNamespaces[] = 100;

Excellent! Thank you. The more people we get on board, the better chance this site will have of being the "official" go-to wiki for all things Star Trek Online. Yep, started on the 22'nd. I was going to add it to current events but I didn't realize I had to be an admin to do that. And don't worry, StormShade said they'll still be inviting people in through the whole closed beta. Actually I realize I should clarify that my experience is administering mediawiki software--I am not an administrator on any Wikipedia Foundation projects, though I am a contributor. I primarily administer an internal corporate mediawiki, although I did setup the never-completed lineagewiki.com. I am well-versed with templating and technical aspects. diff css[edit source]

The reason why it was set to light gray on white is because the body text was set to light gray (like the rest of the site), while the edit comparison boxes were left at their default white. I fixed them now. –TerranRich ( hail ∙ log ∙ comm ) 21:00, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

NPC infobox[edit source]

It might be worth creating an NPC infobox, there is gonna be quite a lot of them on here eventually I would have thought. Might be useful for some features like auto categorisation later. I would do it but you use a slightly different format to how I am used to. --Lem 21:45, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Ok I made one but it uses the formatting of the mission box at the moment, will need more faction color schemes for Romulans, cardassians and "other" affiliation like the klingon and federation at the moment. What do ya think? :) --Lem (talk) 14:19, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

Weapons, items and other stuff?[edit source]

How are we handling these? Are we going with a similar method to how Lem has set out the Missions? I.e. using templates and Weapon:Random_Weapon_Name_Mk_II then adding to a Catgegory:Weapons, or is some other method better? Flibby 23:33, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, I tinkered around with actually making the Mission: thing a real wiki namespace, and it blew up in my face. I then had to repair everything manually in the database one article at a time. Messed up tables[edit source]

Just wanted to let you know, as it must have been due to something getting changed in the stylesheets (maybe to do with the new border around the contents list on an article), that a bunch of tables across the site have developed 1 - 2px borders, and some borders have messed up colours such as Federation vessels, Player race and Class_(starship). Wasn't sure if this was intentional or not and just wanted to let you know. Flibby 00:07, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

I recently made it so that all tables had borders by default. I just added CSS styling for a "plain" table class, so we should use that from now if we are going to use tables without any borders (e.g. for styling and content placement, which really should be done using DIV tags instead). –TerranRich ( hail ∙ log ∙ comm ) 00:17, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Every recent change in the list has a border around it, which only shows up if you have "Enhanced recent changes (requires JavaScript)" enabled in Preferences (under Recent Changes). —Rick 12:42, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

infoboxes[edit source]

Hi Rich, I think this might be something to do with the div class for the infoboxes but they seem to want headlines to clear the bottom before they are shown. This means on the longer infoboxes you get with images or a lot of data like on Federation Escort you get a lot of wasted black space. It would be better if the headlines could wrap to the infobox like they do on memory alpha etc as you aren't wasting space then (eg. http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Jean-Luc_Picard) --Lem (talk) 14:56, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

DPL is primarily used in two ways: a) to provide custom searches for "things to do" pages. Like, over at Memory Alpha, I have a DPL for "all pages in the Characters category that do not have a Template:Character", i.e., that's something that needs to be fixed. The other thing it's good at is automating lists we would normally have to maintain, such as, say, List_of_episodes. Whether it can replicate those lists depends entirely on sorting, templates used, and so forth. It can do a lot, but it does take a bit of getting used to. --Morbus Iff 14:37, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

My thinking is this: using a prefix avoids any possibility of duplicate articles, especially with items. I can't think of any examples at the moment, but I nearly ran into having duplicate articles the other day, so I've just been using prefixes. In MediaWiki terms, "prefixes", such as Quest:ABC, would usually be a MediaWiki namespace. For those sites that didn't implement namespaces (easiest way to tell? check out the search page filter options: http://www.wowwiki.com/Special:Search?search=a&go=1 shows that they made "Guild" and "Server:" a namespace, but "Quest:" they're using just as a prefix), they mimick namespaces by not having a space between the prefix and the subject. If we're not gonna use a namespace (and I'd be OK with that), I would suggest we move all to the no-space prefix format (Mission:ABC, not Mission: ABC). I quite like it how it is, normally on other wikis I have seen they distinguish between things with the same name using brackets after eg. Tribbles (mission) and Tribbles (item) and have a disambig page on Tribble. I don't see the point in getting rid of the space at all to be honest. --Lem (talk) 23:05, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
That's fine... I just don't want a Mission namespace, as they are excluded from search results, aren't they? If not, then a namespace would be fine, but I don't see the point in having an actual namespace for Mission articles... I tried that a few days ago and made a mess of things after I reverted back to non-namespace usage. @Lem: the disambiguation and (parens) suffixes sort of thing is directly from Wikipedia, primarily because the use of additional namespaces for organizing content tends to be frowned upon - Wikipedia doesn't use it at all, nor do any of the Wikia-hosted installations. @TerranRich: by default, custom namespaces are excluded from the search, but the end-user could use to search them specifically. There's also a way to *force* a new namespace to be searched by default but, if I recall correctly, that would only affect new users who havent' yet saved any preferences... existing users would have to manually add a new namespace to their default search via the preferences. @Both: Ideally, I just want us to use *something* that *other wiki users can expect to know*. That's either a) suffixes per Wikipedia, b) actual custom namespaces, or c) prefixing with no spaces. I've never seen, in any major wiki, the use of "Prefix: ABC" (with space). From those three options, if I had to choose one that would satisfy most everyone, it'd be c), "Prefix:ABC". --Morbus Iff 23:34, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

Template:Infobox, “Stop The Signal”, and a request[edit source]

Hi! Sorry to be dropping so much on you at once, but there are a few things I've noticed that I wanted to bring to your attention.

1: Template:Infobox is great, but as I wrote on its discussion page, the head1 field doesn't seem to be working. On your example ... okay, never mind, it seems like you fixed this as I was writing this, haha! Thank you!

2: “Stop The Signal” is basically the same as the page I made, “Stop the Signal” but I think my capitalization is the proper in-game one. Not quite 100% on that, but pretty sure. I didn't realize there was another page until after I'd gotten started on my own, but I can't delete it, and it's probably best to leave it up to your judgment, anyway.

3. That request; I was wondering if you would be willing to make me an admin? I'll admit freely that I only know the basics of wikicode, but I'm doing my best to learn as I go, and I'm a huge Trekkie, so I would absolutely love to help STOwiki out as much as possible. I'll understand if you don't think I'm qualified for the position, however.

In-game version is Stop The Signal, capitalized. The page was originally called Stop the Signal, but Lem had moved it to the capitalized version last week. Example:_Item_InfoBox_Formatting[edit source]

Handling skills[edit source]

Wondering how you want skills handled. I know the manual of style says to use a separate page for all skills with a Skill: prefix, like Skill: Assault Training but it doesn't say anything about Bridge Officer skills like "Science Team" which has 3 levels but they all do the same thing - just each higher grades have more power. Do you want 3 different articles for each page or just one article showing the skill and the differences between ranks? Currently the bridge officer abilities page links have each skill as a separate article but I wanted to make sure as it'll be a nightmare to edit once there all there.

I only came across this when I started to add all of the skill table skills for each profession and faction, and when I came across skills that unlocked another skill I was unsure how to proceed so I wanted to ask first before adding any more.

I agree as well. Just like items are handled (aMks on one page), Skills should be handled that way, too. I'm still a bit foggy on the difference between player skills and BOff skills. –TerranRich (ETC) @ 16:09, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
Player skills are things that can be trained with skill points, bridge officer skills are strictly speaking abilities as they provide the players with space abilities/powers that player skills improve and the bridge officers with their own ground abilities which again are improved by the player skill. Player abilities are awarded for reaching certain ranks/grades, they too are improved by player skills, and some are the same as bridge officer abilities like "target shields". Apostrophe in search bar = 403 Forbidden[edit source]

I known I mentioned this a while back in an e-mail, but it's getting hard to search for things, especially for the Klingon side as many of the Klingon Empire names have a ' in them. I googled around for something about it and someone mentioned something about it possibly being caused by one of the addons that are used with the Wiki. Second skin[edit source]

Second skin looks very clean and nice. The only problem I can see with it is if people develop tables etc. for articles with it, then they will look very messed up on the LCARS skin due to one having 100% page width and one having about 65%. --Flibby 22:05, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Player fleets[edit source]

FAO: Rich, Lem, Bob etc... I never know who's page to post on :P

Thinking it might be nice to make a "Player Fleets" category for players using the site, and then players can make a "Fleet: My Fleet" article or something to create some information about their own fleets. Just to go with the user hub really and I thought it'd be nice to have a collection of player fleets in the wiki. Honestly I am heavily against it, we had this issue on guild wars wiki, and they were allowed because it was run by the games developers and they wanted it to be a socially integrated platform with the game, however they become a huge unmanageable beast over time. People fill recent changes with minor edits to their fleet page. You get numerous fleet pages with one sentence on, tons of pointless screenshots. And trying to apply any kind of policy to them is a nightmare, for example any kind of retention time on them becomes disputed (obviously fleets come and go and no one closes the page down when they go). It causes mass arguments as more petty patrollers enforced policy strictly. They are targets for inter-fleet vandalism. On another guild wars wiki, guild wiki that exists, they ended up deleting the whole guild namespace and thousands of articles on player guilds because they became just too much trouble. In conclusion they provide little information anyone else actually gives a dam about besides a contact address for recruitment. How to Become a Liberated Borg?[edit source]

I am really sorry I'm not one to bother people like this, but how do you get the liberated borg species, I have seen websites that say you need to have a lifetime subscription, others say that you need to have a preordered copy, and some say you need the special edition, it's just frustrating.
