Template:Character Infobox[]

I put together an infobox template where you tried to create one. The code you used is pasted below and is what you write to use a template on a page, not create one. If there are any changes you want made to the design, feel free to let me know. Eyes User-Eyes-Sig 15:13, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Special:RecentChanges[]

By the way, welcome to the wiki. (I'm rather new to this wiki as well.) To give out some friendly advice, when you're going to make a lot of edits to one page to see how it looks, it's helpful to others if you try to remember to preview before you save. Otherwise, it's harder to keep track of the changes. (Don't get me wrong; forgetting for a few edits is no big deal and is usually ignored, but doing this many edits a lot might catch the wrong kind of attention.) I keep forgetting to do that; thanks for the reminder! Exo 15:46, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

You might be going a bit too far[]

Hello Exo. I'm not an admin of the wiki. Still I think you might be going a bit too far with your user page. Some information about your character seems fine but you're adding every tiny detail about your character and BOFFs. IMO that's a bit too much. And frankly, it's a bit irritating to see your character page getting updated that often.

As far as I get it, STO Wiki is not supposed to be a collection of character biography articles. And your user page might already be one of the largest on the wiki. So you might consider slowing and trimming it down a bit. Unless, of course, the admins think what you're doing is perfectly fine. Regards, -- Backyardserenade 09:29, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

You got it! Exo 08:46, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Eh, this is a bit discouraging to see.
Yes, of course the wiki's purpose is to document the game, not the players. But this is userspace, not mainspace. This isn't the day of NES cartridges where space for text was limited. There are many reasons not to get too concerned over userspace:
  • Text is small and can be compressed very well (and having looked at the database tables behind a wiki before, I'm pretty sure most of it is). Hard drive space is pretty inexpensive, anyway.
  • A single user's user page, even if filled with lots of text, will consume little bandwidth in comparison to that used by mainspace because user pages don't get looked at by that many people.
  • A user page is not likely to be transcluded anywhere, so editing it is not going to add anything to the job queue. The performance impact on the wiki is negligible.
  • Spamming Special:RecentChanges is a concern, but after being advised to be careful, Exo was being reasonable.
Now, you can say STOW:BOLD all you want, but some people aren't going to be comfortable jumping right into mainspace editing. While not everyone who ends up playing around in userspace is going to start contributing to mainspace, many well as they become more comfortable with wiki editing. Also, with more of their attention on the wiki, they're likely to get a better sense of the activity that happens on the wiki and more likely to find something going on in mainspace that they're interested in contributing to.
So, summing it up, this warning, however friendly, really shouldn't have happened, IMO. No, we don't want "User:Exo" to be the only thing showing up on RC, but a handful of edits a day shouldn't be regarded as a problem. (Especially since it isn't as if it'll go on forever.)
After all, we have remarkably few userspace edits going on. Someone could argue that we're more focused on our primary purpose, but I'd argue that probably means a smaller community getting less done in mainspace too. Let's not get hung up on tens of KB, or even a few hundred KB, of only semi-relevant text that's clearly outside of mainspace, as long as it as least semi-relevant. I hope that my comment wasn't too harsh. It was definitely not a warning (since, again, I'm not an admin). And I did not mean for Exo to stop using his user page entirely or deleting all the content on it. However, I did ask him to be a bit more reasonable (or at least I intended it that way). And tell me all you want, the page was stuffed with a lot of exorbitant information and I got the notion that this might get out of hand. That's all. -- Backyardserenade 14:10, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
No worries, bros. S'all cool. As the good Doctor might say, "I have a thing. It's like a plan, but with more greatness."
Won't be cluttering up my userpage with exorbitant info, and you definitely won't have to worry about any more edits outta me. --

Hi guys. Lets put this matter behind us, shall we? Theres no need for this to get uncivil. For the record, I don't care what anyone does with their User: page, as long as its vaguely related to the game. If you think we need to clarify the policy on this stuff, lets discuss it on the Project:Policy page. --Zutty 16:08, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
