Traits add extra bonuses to attributes or abilities of your game character. Most traits are passive bonuses, but some also include a special ability your character can activate. Each passive trait either gives a bonus for ground or for space combat. Traits therefore have a direct influence on the overall strengths of your character and, along with your skills and Captain Specializations, are a key to adapting your character to your play style. Unlike skills, however, traits can be reassigned in-game without cost anywhere within social hubs or in sector space.
Without extra purchases (via a fleet holding), each level 60 character has slots for the following amount of traits:
- 1 Species Trait: A permanent, non-customizable trait (which may consist of more than one bonus) based on the choice of the player race. Alien captains can fully customize their racial trait during character creation.
- 9 Personal Traits (9 slots; three at beginning, one additional slot every 10 levels until level 60): Additional selectable traits which can be changed in-game. Some are available based on the player's career path (adding four specific traits to the player's choice) as well as race, while the majority is obtainable by finishing Research & Development schools and through Genetic Resequencers (found by opening lockboxes or sold on the exchange under the Reward Pack category).
- 4 Starship Traits (4 slots unlocked at level 50; 1 extra slot purchasable at the Fleet Research Lab): Additional selectable traits which can be changed in-game and only affect space combat. Traits can be unlocked either via the Captain Specialization system or by achieving Starship Mastery level 5 in a tier 6 ship.
- 12 Reputation Traits (4 slots for Active Traits, 4 slots for Ground Traits, 4 slots for Space Traits, all unlocked at level 50; 1 extra slot for each category purchasable at the Fleet Research Lab): Traits which are unlocked via the reputation system. Active Traits grant a clickable ability for either space or ground combat depending on the respective reputation faction.
- Other Traits: Special traits obtained from certain missions that are automatically slotted.
Species traits
Each playable race has an innate, i.e., built-in and unchangeable, trait. Not occupying any trait slot, race-specific innate traits are usually a combination of two or three Personal traits (which are then no longer among the selectable trait pool for a given species).
