This is incorrect. STO uses a two roll system on attack. The first roll is to determine if the attack is a hit or a miss. If the attack is a miss, no further calculations are made. If the attack is a hit then and only then is that attack checked for additional effects. One of those effects would be a critical hit.
Therefore if a you have a hit rate of 50% and a crit rate of 10% out of a "perfect sample" of 100 shots fired you would have 50 hits and 5 of those hits would be converted to add critical damage.
If the mechanic worked as stated in this article you could simply add crit chance and completely bypass the acc/defense system, and this is not the case. 188.8.131.52 16:08, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
