Armor Penetration causes your weapons to behave as if the target's Damage Resistance Rating is lower than their actual value by the same amount as your Armor Penetration value.

Hull Penetration is a Captain Tactical skill available through the skill system at the level 30 (Player rank: Captain, Commander). There are three total skill nodes in this chain, each costing 1 Space Point to purchase.
This skill improves the damage dealt by your starship weapons by reducing the amount of damage resistance your target has. All Hull Penetration points of every source are summed up, converted to armor penetration (1 armor penetration for each 10 hull penetration) and added to the armor penetration points from other sources. This value gets inserted into the damage resistance formula where it reduces the damage resistance of the target.
