Science Vessel

From Star Trek Online Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search
A Nova class vessel
For the NPC ships, see Federation Science Vessel (Mob).

Science Vessels are medium-sized, versatile ships. They have good all-round performance compared to escorts and cruisers, and have their weaker hulls compensated for by stronger shields. Science vessels are typically deployed in research and exploration missions, but are also effective in combat using powerful buffs, debuffs, and shield healing abilities, in addition to integrated sub-system targetting.

Compared to other Federation vessels, Science Vessels have weak hulls and strong shields, gaining a 30% bonus to shield strength over Cruisers of the same tier. All Federation Science Vessels have 3 device slots and gain a bonus +15 auxiliary power.

Variants[edit | edit source]

Federation Science Vessels[edit | edit source]

Oberth Class Light Science Vessel[edit | edit source]

Oberth class
First used by Starfleet as a science ship and scout vessel in the late 23rd century, the Oberth class was phased out of service before the Dominion War. Recent improvements in modular ship construction and shield design have made the ship design viable for Lieutenant-rank missions.

Science Vessel[edit | edit source]

Nova class
The Science vessel is a type of Federation starship designed to replace the aging Oberth Class for short-term planetary research missions. It was placed in service starting in the mid-to-late 24th century. It is not typically suitable for combat operations.

Science Vessel Refit[edit | edit source]

Rhode Island class
The Rhode Island class is a refit of the Nova class for the 25th century. The first vessel of its kind, USS Rhode Island was commanded by Captain Harry Kim. More capable a ship than the Nova and rivaling her sister ships, the refit can handle combat with heavy Klingon warships from 2404 and travel at warp speeds high enough to conduct deep space exploration.

Research Science Vessel[edit | edit source]

Olympic class
The Federation Research Science Vessel is very distinct in appearance. They have, unlike most Starfleet vessels, a spherical main hull rather than the typical saucer style and their pylons which lead to the nacelles are connect to the fore section of the secondary hull in an up-swept fashion. The nacelles are also very long, typically spanning the full length of the secondary hull.

Advanced Research Vessel[edit | edit source]

Nebula class
The Advanced Research Science Vessel is known as the new "workhorse" of the Federation, this ship type has been in Starfleet service since 2363. This class of vessel replaced the Miranda class as the multi-purpose mission vessel, taking on various tasks from patrols to humanitarian or diplomatic missions, exploration and research duties.

Long Range Science Vessel[edit | edit source]

Intrepid class
The Long Range Science Vessel is one of the most influential types of ships in Starfleet to-date. The most renowned Long Range Science Vessel, U.S.S. Voyager launched in 2371 was commanded by Captain now Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway.

Long Range Science Vessel Refit[edit | edit source]

Bellerophon class
The Bellerophon class is based on the iconic Intrepid class, but with a more advanced design. The Bellerophon class has a unique half-moon shaped main deflector and distinctive blue bussard collectors, as well as the whiter hull color found in 25th century starship designs.

Reconnaissance Science Vessel[edit | edit source]

Luna class
The Reconnaissance Science Vessel is one of the newer line of Federation scientific starships in the Star Trek universe and was built not long after the Dominion war had ended with the purpose of exploration and research. One notable vessel of the Recon line (or more specifically the Luna class) is the USS Titan.

Mirror Universe Reconnaissance Science Vessel[edit | edit source]

Trident class
Utilised by the Terran Empire and an occasional few having drifted over via the Azure Nebula spacial rift, this ship looks more like the Prime Universe Deep Space Science Vessel, but has more of a tactical advantage in Bridge Officer slots and console configuration almost identical to the Prime Universe Reconnaissance Science Vessel.

Deep Space Science Vessel[edit | edit source]

Destiny class
The Deep Space Science Vessel was designed with a rekindled interest of space exploration after the Dominion Wars, the vessel is equipped with many tools necessary to chart the stars and guide Starfleet into a new age of discovery. The Deep Space Science Vessel has extra Engineering facilities made necessary to make its own repairs or act as a support ship for fleets.

Mirror Universe Deep Space Science Vessel[edit | edit source]

Luna class
Utilised by the Terran Empire and an occasional few having drifted over via the Azure Nebula spacial rift, this ship looks more like the Prime Universe Reconnaissance Science Vessel, but has more of an Engineering orientation in Bridge Officer slots and console configuration almost identical to the Prime Universe Deep Space Science Vessel.

Advanced Research Vessel Retrofit[edit | edit source]

Magellan class
The Advanced Research Vessel Retrofit is a heavily modified version of the Advanced Research Science Vessel. Starfleet upgraded this vessel with the latest standard equipment used in the early 25th century. It is also very capable at surviving for an extended period.

D'Kyr Science Vessel[edit | edit source]

D'Kyr class
This Vulcan design has been in continual use since the 22nd century and has seen use as a combat cruiser, a planetary defense ship, an exploration vessel and a rescue ship. It is heavily Science biased, but has extremely good Engineering abilities at its disposal as well.

Wells Temporal Science Vessel[edit | edit source]

Wells class
The Wells Temporal Science Vessel is a 29th Century Timeship recovered from the Tholian Assembly who found it after it drifted through the spacial rift in the Azure Nebula. Most of the advanced technology from these ships have been stripped, and have been replaced with contemporary equipment. Nevertheless, the Wells is probably the most advanced Science Vessel Starfleet has available.

Solanae Dyson Science Destroyer[edit | edit source]

Solanae class
Though the Solanae class' lines and key traits follow standard Starfleet design principles - notably resembling the Fleet Avenger Battle Cruiser's profile - the incorporation of materials and technology discovered in the Solanae Dyson Sphere has given the vessel a distinct and unmistakable visual signature. The saucer and hull are constructed from large, overlapping plates, constructed from the same white, lattice-patterned material that makes up the Obelisk Carrier (another Sphere-derived ship). Elongated warp nacelles are placed at the ends of pylons level with the secondary hull, and rather than the common blue-and-red glow of Starfleet-standard nacelles, are lit purple, not unlike vessels equipped with the Jem'Hadar shield. The saucer itself is distinguished by a split design, with a gap in the bow revealing the Solanae's secondary deflector.

Long Range Science Vessel Retrofit[edit | edit source]

Intrepid class
The Long Range Science Vessel Retrofit is a heavily modified version of the Long Range Science Vessel. Starfleet upgraded this variant with the latest standard equipment used in the early 25th century. It is quick vessel for its type and is capable of signifcant Science orientated abilities, but is less capable of dishing out conventional damage.

Multi-Mission Surveillance Explorer[edit | edit source]

Vesta class
Starfleet's first Multi-Mission Explorer, the Vesta class entered service in 2380. Since then, these ships have more than proven themselves in combat and exploration alike. This variant is the more Science orientated of the three vessels, with five Science console slots and a high turn rate, this ship is capable of dishing out impressive exotic damage and abilities.

Multi-Mission Reconnaissance Explorer[edit | edit source]

Aventine class
Named after the Vesta class vessel U.S.S. Aventine, the Aventine class has a sharper saucer and its pylons are angled forward. These features give the ship a more sleek profile than the original Vesta. This variant is the more Tactically focussed of the three vessels, capable of dishing out impressive damage for a Science Vessel.

Multi-Mission Reconnaissance Explorer[edit | edit source]

Rademaker class
The Rademaker class is a loose hybrid between the Vesta and Aventine classes, sporting a more oval saucer and the largest nacelles. The shuttle bay launch area is wider and illuminated. This variant is the Engineering variant of the three vessels, allowing it to survive for an extended period of time.

Dyson Reconnaissance Science Destroyer[edit | edit source]

Montgomery class
The Montgomery Class is an upgraded variant of the Dyson Science Destroyer. It features an additional Tactical console slot, improved hull and shield rating, and comes equipped with the Proton Destabilizer Module Universal Console. This console allows you to draw power from your warp core to emit a devastating proton beam from your deflector focused on a nearby enemy. Periodically arcing waves of proton energy will lash out at foes nearby your targeted enemy dealing damage to all enemies affected.

Dyson Strategic Science Destroyer[edit | edit source]

Omega class
The Omega Class is an upgraded variant of the Dyson Science Destroyer. It features an additional Engineering console slot, improved hull and shield rating, and comes equipped with the Protonic Shielding Matrix Universal Console. This console allows your Dyson class starship to store and then divert tremendous amounts of proton particles to periodically reinforce your shields for a while. This will cause your starship to negate large amounts of damage every few seconds for a short time.

Dyson Surveillance Science Destroyer[edit | edit source]

Helios class
The Helios class is an upgraded variant of the Dyson Science Destroyer. It features an additional Science console slot, improved hull and shield rating, and comes equipped with the Shield Inversion Projector Universal Console. This console allows your Dyson class starship to emit a devastating tachyon beam blast from your deflector, you can cause your foe's shields to briefly collapse in a wave of energy. The affected enemy will have their shields weakened and suffer heavy shield and hull damage. Allies within the wave will receive a large amount of shield healing.

Research Science Vessel Retrofit[edit | edit source]

Olympic class
The Retrofit version of the Olympic Class is a heavily modified version of the Research Science Vessel. Starfleet upgraded this vessel with the latest standard equipment used in the early 25th century. It is also very capable at surviving for an extended period.

The Fleet version adds another Engineering Console slot as well as better hull and shields.

Fleet Deep Space Science Vessel[edit | edit source]

Destiny class
The Deep Space Science Vessel was designed with a rekindled interest of space exploration after the Dominion Wars, the vessel is equipped with many tools necessary to chart the stars and guide Starfleet into a new age of discovery. The Deep Space Science Vessel has extra Engineering facilities made necessary to make its own repairs or act as a support ship for fleets. The Fleer variant adds a fifth Science Console slot as well as better shield and hull strength.

Fleet Reconnaissance Science Vessel[edit | edit source]

Polaris class
The Reconnaissance Science Vessel is one of the newer line of Federation scientific starships in the Star Trek universe and was built not long after the Dominion war had ended with the purpose of exploration and research. One notable vessel of the Recon line (or more specifically the Luna class) is the USS Titan. The Fleet version adds an additional Tactical console slot as well as stronger hull and shields.

Fleet Science Vessel Retrofit[edit | edit source]

Nova class
The Retrofit version of the Nova Class is a heavily modified version of the standard Science Vessel. Starfleet upgraded this vessel with the latest standard equipment used in the early 25th century. It is capable of dishing out moderate amounts of damage, whilst combining with its superior maneuverability and smaller size makes this vessel a unique vessel to both fly and take down. The Fleet version adds another Engineering console slot, replaced the Ensign Tactical Bridge Officer slot with an Ensign Science Bridge Officer slot, the Lieutenant Tactical Bridge Officer slot with a Lieutenant Science Bridge Officer slot, the Lieutenant Commander Science Bridge Officer slot with a Lieutenant Commander Tactical Bridge Officer slot and adds better hull and shield strength.

Fleet Advanced Research Vessel Retrofit[edit | edit source]

Magellan class
The Advanced Research Vessel Retrofit is a heavily modified version of the Advanced Research Science Vessel. Starfleet upgraded this vessel with the latest standard equipment used in the early 25th century. It is also very capable at surviving for an extended period. The Fleet version adds another Engineering Console slot as well as better hull and shield strength.

Fleet Long Range Science Vessel Retrofit[edit | edit source]

Intrepid class
The Long Range Science Vessel Retrofit is a heavily modified version of the Long Range Science Vessel. Starfleet upgraded this variant with the latest standard equipment used in the early 25th century. It is quick vessel for its type and is capable of signifcant Science orientated abilities, but is less capable of dishing out conventional damage. The Fleet version adds a third Tactical Consolse slot as well as better overall hull and shield strength.

Cross-Faction Science Vessels[edit | edit source]

Tholian Orb Weaver[edit | edit source]

Orb Weaver Class
Recent conflicts with the Tholian Assembly have resulted in a handful of captured Tholian vessels. Tholian technology is very different from other Alpha Quadrant powers, and these vessels are prized as opportunities for study as well as new combat vessels. The Orb Weaver is an example of an extremely versitile Science Vessel with variations on its orientation possible. However, with the turn-rate being as slow as it is, this ship will struggle to keep up with other Science Vessels.

Voth Palisade Science Vessel[edit | edit source]

Palisade Class
The Palisade Science Vessel boasts enhanced scientific capabilities, having first been designed for use as a combination exploration and research vessel. Despite being focused on the gathering of knowledge, this ship design is still fully capable of defending itself in a direct confrontation. This vessel is completely support-capable, allowing the restoration of nearby allied ships significantly easier on this vessel than other ships. This ship is an Engineering orientated Science Vessel, making it unable to dish out conventional damage but very capable of dishing out exotic damage from Gravity Wells and such.

Performance[edit | edit source]

These starships perform well in all areas of space combat. They have innate abilities that allow them to upgrade the next beam attack fired by one of their beam weapons to attempt to render the targetted subsystem offline temporarily. These abilities, however, carry a large cooldown, and can backfire on the player by increasing the regular beam recharge time of the beam weapon that fired the shot.

Given science vessels' strong shields, they generally have the weakest hulls out of all the ranks and starship lines in the Federation, although this can be improved with the relevant skills on the skill tables. The ships have excellent Science capabilities and this allows them to perform very well as a support vessel with debuffs, crowd control and AoE damage. These ships are generally used by players who want to make a "tank-like" ship. Some science vessels are able to support shields that are stronger then 22,000 points.

Abilities[edit | edit source]

Subsystem Targeting[edit | edit source]

The Science Vessel comes with built-in Subsystem Targeting abilities. These built-in abilities stay at Rank I and do not automatically rank up when acquiring higher tier Science starships. They are separate from Subsystem Targeting abilities gained through Tactical Space Bridge officer abilities.

Activating a subsystem targeting ability will upgrade all energy weapons to inflict a stacking power drain on the foe's targeted subsystem for the next 10 seconds. They will also have a small chance to knock the targeted subsystem offline for a short duration.

Sensor Analysis[edit | edit source]

Sensor Analysis is a toggled ability which can be used on any hostile or a friendly target within range, but the Science Vessel cannot target itself. It has only a brief cooldown (5 seconds), but it can only affect one target at a time. It will remain active indefinitely until manually toggled off. The sensor lock will also be broken if the targeted vessel moves out of sensor range (10 km), Placates the Science Vessel (such as with Jam Sensors, or is destroyed.

When used on a hostile target, it grants a +5% bonus to damage and power drain against that target; this is achieved through a reduction in the target's damage and drain resistance. The latter bonus is meant to complement the power drain of the Science Vessel's innate subsystem targeting, but will affect other power draining abilities as well. These bonuses will increase by an additional 5% every 3 seconds until achieving a maximum of 6 stacks for a total of +30% damage and drain. Additionally, at 6 stacks, the target suffers a 50% reduction to all incoming heals.

When used on a friendly target, that target receives a bonus of +5% per stack to all shield and hull healing effects received. Again, this bonus increases by 5% every 3 seconds until reaching 6 stacks for a total of +30% healing.

If Sensor Analysis is toggled or forced off, all stacks granting bonus damage/drain or healing will be lost and must be gained all over again. Certain modifiers on crafted Secondary Deflectors can grant additional bonuses to the Sensor Analysis ability.
