Shouldn't the icon size be more like 49x64 which seems to be their native resolution? To obtain such icons you will need to boost the interface scale to 1.5 (btw as far as I can determine, the screen resolution does not impact the ui pixel size). Interestingly, the Items equipped to your ship and crew are more clearly than those equipped to you or those in your inventory. One should also note, that the icon should be saved as png and with the proper name "itemXYZ icon.png". --RachelGarrett 13:47, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

I agree, the bigger the better, the wiki can always resize the image to be smaller if needs be, but have the best and largest quality image you can. --Lem (talk) 13:52, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

I agree with Flibby. While bigger can be better, it may not be a bad idea to keep with the size in game for most stuff, as you can see degradation in the icon at the larger size.

Hmm, it was pretty egotistical of me to think I had the highest resolution icons. I came across the Tribble page just earlier, which has full-resolution icons, and I was surprised there was a larger size available. I will definitely change this to 49×64, and tell readers about boosting the interface scale to 1.5× for the full version of the icons. As for the comparison above, the larger icon seems sharper to me, not degraded. Um... I tried 1.50× UI size and the icon was large and blurry. Around 1.30× and even then the icon isn't wide enough. It's only 47×64 pixels in size. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. And it's still blurry! –TerranRich (ETC) @ 07:08, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
Ok, confirmed what you said on another Laptop. Interestingly the native resolution of the screen seems to play into the equation. I tried different window sizes on my own system without any difference. Another factor is the location of the item to be captured. In the inventory and your characters equipment screen it is often blurred, while items equipped with your ship and BOs look sharper. Very Funny. For the Record, I have a 1680x1050 display and a GeForce 8800GT under Win XP. The other configuration was a 1280x800 display with an 8400 GT under Win7. --RachelGarrett 12:49, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
I looked a bit harder at the icon, and while it does look sharper, it seems to me that it looks different than it should. Maybe it's my tired eyes, but I can see the jagged edges of the lines and colors in the larger one.

Phaser Beam Array icon.png
Actually, if I look at the the Phaser Beam Array with its slope, I'm pretty sure that the truth lies somewhere in the region of 64px height (although from a CG point of view, it should be 48px width and not 47px or 49px). The reason you see jagged lines in the RCS icon is that they did some pixel-art in the paint job. When it is scaled down, it blurs with the surrounding colors. That's why it does not jump at the viewer at the default UI size. --RachelGarrett 21:20, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

The icon images native resolution definitely looks to be 49x64. You can only seem to get this resolution as Rachel states by having the item equipped. If you don't, it stretched the resolution to a new size. Here's two examples:
ADF-1920x1080-equipped.png ADF-1920x1080-inven.png
First one is equipped, second is from the inventory. You can see its stretched the image out a little and makes it a bit blurry. The resolution you run at doesn't matter, I tried at 1360x768 and lots of resolution between that and 1920x1080, the results were the same. I did have to run at 1.49 HUD zoom though. Running at 1.50 made the images 50x64 rather than 49x64 and it blurred them out. Here's some other 49x64 examples from equipped items:

The Phaser Beam Array Standard Issue icon is one I took from the game at 1.49x zoom and not Rachels. The image size is slightly higher, but I'm not sure if that is because of the extra screen resolution (doubtful) or the applications we used (probable). Also, 2x HUD zoom didn't help it just blurred the icon more, so 49x64 looks to be the icon size that is best. --Flibby 22:50, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
Interestingly, your phaser Beam Array Icon seems to have a lower saturation than mine. Also I tried yesterday to cut out some Data Sample from the pick-up dialog. Guess what: The icons had a size of 50x63 (or something like that, can't remember 100%). It gets crazier all the time. BTW what do you mean with "the applications that we used"? Cropping the icons should not alter their pixel information regardless of the drawing/capturing application we use.--RachelGarrett 08:09, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

That SHOULD be a lossless workflow resulting in icons with pricisely the same pixel information. I copy-and-paste the screenshots using "Print" and the Windows clipboard. Should make no visible difference at all compared to your TGA->PNG approach (although the file sizes may differ indeed depending on the compression algorithm used by the saving application). The strange thing is, my icon has different colors than yours... I'll try to do it your way next time I'm at any Exchange to see, if STO manipulates the colors before writing the TGA. Capturing Icons from Vendors[edit source]

Just found out that at 1.52 UI Magnification I can fetch a whole bunch of 49x64 icons at once from a Vendor (tested it with Xeno).--RachelGarrett 15:01, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Multiple icons for one ability[edit source]

How should the icons for abilities such as Beam Array: Overload or Cannon: Rapid Fire be handled? The icon for these abilities change depending on which type of weapon is equipped (phaser, disruptor, etc)).

I figured I would include all of them. However looking deeper into the icons in the game files that is going to be a LOT of icons. For example: Beam Array: Overload has 24 icons. 6 Fed Beam Arrays, 6 Fed Dual Beam Banks plus the 12 matching Klingon icons. Cannon: Rapid Fire has 36 icons. 6 Fed Cannons, 6 Fed Dual Cannons, 6 Fed Dual Heavy Cannons, plus the 18 matching Klingon icons. Moving Images[edit source]

Composite Images[edit source]

I learned today that MediaWiki supports composite images. Images can be laid over top of each other like this:

I had to fix this up a little, so the images were properly overlayed. You had the DIV tags indented, and that interfered with the formatting. There's even:

Uploading Accolade Icons[edit source]

How exactly do I upload an accolade icon? It says here I'm supposed to use "special templates", but I'm not sure where to find them. - Mitchz95 23:38, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

Icon ZIP File[edit source]

I don't know if anyone is aware or not, but the link to the ZIP file containing "nearly every icon in the game" is a dead link; domain for sale. Is this something we can still download from somewhere else? - Keyfob (talk) 02:12, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

Yeah thats an old file dump from years ago. To get the current files you need to extract them from the game data. I'll give you two links. The first gives you an explanation on how it is done. The 2nd is another explanation with a link to the CURRENT file extractor post #353. I use the unpack version. There you can just drag and drop the .hogg file and it will unpack it. From there you need an editor for the .wtex files and so forth

Mk number[edit source]

Currently if you want to display Mk level of an item, you would have to upload an item with integrated Mk number and name it like this: "File:ICONNAME Mk XII icon.png". This isn't convenient because it requires too many icons to be uploaded - 15 variants of each icon if you want to have all options available. So no one is doing it, and in majority of cases option to display Mk level does not exist.

But if we add Mk number to icon similar like rarity is added - transparent rarity image is placed on top of icon, we would only need to upload all Mk levels (example:Mk XII icon.png) so it would be more accessible.
