STOWiki talk:Community portal/Video Advertising

From Star Trek Online Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

Sorry for the delay in my response, I was very busy with IRL work for a few weeks (and then Call of Duty:MW3, and TF2 (when it worked on my PC for a few days). I'm going to make an ad for STOWiki, using some new software (Including RachelGarret's Demorecord Tool), I'll be putting the ad on my livestream so that it recurs every 6 videos as an ad (like the foundry trailers at the min on the livestream), I'll put it on my YouTube as a private video (so it can be posted on StarbaseUGC, STOPortal etc...) (I may make it public if YouTube's T&C allows 'trailers' of this type to be public, I have a fairly large audience, my channel can be found[here|]).

Before I make the ad I need a few things:

1. Does STOwiki have a Photoshop file or PNG logo (with transparent background that can be put in the video)?

2. What should the focus of the video be?: a) 'Come here and edit' or b)'Come here and read our articles' or c) both (a) and (b). Obviously I'll change these words, they're just the 'basic' themes

3. What should the 'slogan' that is placed with the STOwiki logo & URL (, with annotation link to wiki home page)at the end of the vide be if you want one, I was thinking along the lines of 'The Definitive Online Guide to Star Trek Online'?

4. Should I stick a 'QR code' on the closing image (logo, url etc.) that people can scan with their smartphones to take them to STOwiki?

5. Does anyone have any ideas for things to include in the video? I was going to include things such as the walthroughs, with captions such as 'Detailed Walkthroughs'

6. Format- Do you think that it's a good idea to do this video like you're on the bridge of a ship and 'swing' in the demo between looking at different consoles with screen-captured videos of the site plating on them? Anyone have a better idea?

7. Any other ideas?

Please leave your feedback on this here along with any answers to these questions--Cyrano.Jones 19:38, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

1. [1], [2], [3] <-- logos from the skins
2. While our apparent low hit count might have just been a issue with the analytics screwing up with the older skins, I still say both.
3. I like that slogan.
6. That's creative. I like it.
Now, hopefully, this will encourage people with more to say than me to chip in. :) Eyes User-Eyes-Sig.png 16:08, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
Like. I'm lookin forward to see what you can come up with :-). Regards, --RachelGarrett 18:35, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
OK, I'll get to work on the ad wehenever I can, bare in mind that I'm very busy IRL at the min, so it may take a while; It probally won't be done until the first few weeks of January 2012 is that okay? I also have a lot to do for STOWiki, I have to update the Tribble guide with the new tribbles, then write the walkthrough's for the STFs, so you can see why when combining my STOwiki work an loads of IRL work, it'll take a while to make the ad?--Cyrano.Jones 07:33, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
Relax, we're all in the same boat here, no one of us is getting money for this. Hence, take your time, no one can blame you for anything, plus you get bonus points for effort :-). Regards, --RachelGarrett 09:41, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
OK, thanks for the reasuurance (and your demo tool, which I will use to make the ad :P). What should the 'headlines' of the ad be, i.e. what should I put in as the content, I was thinking:
  • Detailed Information Pages
  • Descriptive Walkthroughs
  • Mission Overviews
  • [Register and] Edit for Free!
Is there anytthing else I should add/remove? Please provide feedback here.--Cyrano.Jones 18:32, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
I'd replace 'Walkthroughs' through the more neutral and all-encompassing term 'Guides'. Also you could leave out "Detailed Information Pages" and instead fire a sequence of cool-sounding categories:
  • Ship Specs
  • Trait Builds
  • Skill Descriptions
  • Critter Abilities
  • Equipment Stats
  • Personal Records
  • [be creative]
Also, add a bulletin point for Foundry missions please, we need to get that part of the Wiki off the ground :-). Regards, --RachelGarrett 07:53, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
OK, I'll do those topics then, they're actually better, so here they are just to make it easier to ref in future, I also have a few Questions about what the are:
  • Detailed Guides
  • Ship Specs
  • Trait Builds
  • Skill Descriptions
  • Critter Abiliities (I've never been sure what this word means, I'm new to MMOs (STO was my first, so is any enemy a 'critter'?)
  • Equipment Stats
  • Personal Records (Does this refer to User pages or Character Information pages e.g. Obisek?)
  • Mission Overviews
  • Register and Edit for Free!
While I'm here, can I ask a favour, could you move the video promotion discussion to a seperate discussion page please?--Cyrano.Jones 08:15, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
The original Promotion discussion had it's own page but nobody really paid attention or responded so I folded it back into this one. You could field discussion about your personal video efforts on your talk page though. That's what they're for! :-D --BrooklynKnight 03:22, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
Regarding your questions:
  • Critter Abiliities - STO is my first MMO as well. Maybe "Mob" is a better term.
  • Personal Records - I was thinking of canon NPCs, but no harm done if it suggests more to the viewer (since we have foundry NPCs and user pages on the Wiki as well)

Rachelgarrett: I'm starting work on the ad this weekend, It'll take a few weeks (most likely until first week of Jan), I'm going to post a 'private' draft of the trailer on my youtube channel so only people I give the link to can view it to give feedback. Then once I have feedback I'll improve it, render in the frames better and upload it to youtube as public. I'll then submit it to starbase ugc? I might also submit it to STOked, they know me well over there (In their IRC I'm STOFan, also known as the creator of their youtube page), they'll probally put it on the end of a podcast for us, they also know RachelGarrett well too, so they'll definetly allow it.

::*I'm looking to put the STOWiki info page over a background of videos somewhat like this (!/thomasthecat/media/slideshow?, I was thinking that I could use your files from your 1 year anniversary video? I already have a download of the video from vimeo, so can I take some scenes from that and use them?-You'll get full credit!--Cyrano.Jones 19:10, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

Surely, use it as you see fit. BTW, I'm quite impassionate about credits. Handle that as it works best for the vid. I wont die, if it has not my name in it.--RachelGarrett 19:00, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
Just a quick update here; I've been very busy with academic matters for the last 2 months, and will be for the next month. So I'm going to have to delay the creation of the trailer by a few weeks. Once I'm free I'll get started on it. --Cyrano.Jones 14:20, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
