Ro Laren is the current Head of Security on Deep Space Nine.
Ro Laren was born on Bajor in 2340 during the Cardassian occupation. As a result, she spent 10 years of her childhood in refugee camps. At one point, Cardassian troops tortured her father to death in front of her. She joined Starfleet in 2358 but was court-martialed when eight officers died as a result of her disobeying orders.
In 2368 she was reinstated into Starfleet in exchange for helping to track down a Bajoran terrorist. She served aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise-D and, with the support of Jean-Luc Picard, stayed aboard the Enterprise following the mission's completion. In 2370 she was assigned to infiltrate the Maquis but, sympathizing with their cause, defected to them.
Around 2379 she surrendered herself to Starfleet authorities, pleaded guilty to charges of desertion and defection to the Maquis, and was ordered to serve time at a penal facility on Earth. Ro completed her sentence in 2382 and returned to Bajor where she accepted a commission in the Bajoran Militia and subsequently appointed head of security for Deep Space 9.
