In A Taste of Collateral Damage the player's ship is reassigned to non-aligned space by Starfleet's top brass to assess promising, new technology. The situation quickly turns sideways as the player gets caught in a quagmire, only to find there is a greater threat at the doorstep.

Synopsis[ | ]

Upon entering the Abraxas System, the player finds a planet that has been made inimical to life by its former inhabitants, who are now forced to reside in orbiting space stations. It soon becomes clear why the player’s ship has been called in. Three of Starfleet’s top brass, Admirals Casse and Saslish, and Ambassador Benoit, are in the process of evaluating a new weapon system and formalizing a treaty with the Abraxians. The player’s ship is then ordered to participate in simulated battle exercises to test the combat effectiveness of the Unmanned Abraxian Fighters (UAFs).

Upon beaming down to Station Azure 9, the player finds that Starfleet, in good faith, has already started construction of a Main Operating Base. After taking the turbolift deep below the asteroid’s surface, the player attends a meeting with the Admirals and Premier Tyrell, leader of the Abraxians. A quick inspection of the Ops Center reveals that the Abraxians are prodigious bioengineers. Their bioengineered Drones, remotely controlled from safety, are of great interest to Starfleet and could turn the tide in the fight against the Borg. But the meeting is cut short when the Ops Center is attacked by terrorists.

With intelligence gathered by Deputy Minister Eldon, the player beams down to Abraxas III in an effort to track down the terrorists and rescue the Admirals. Things start to unravel as the player investigates the area. The Admirals are found safe and secure – not as hostages but as guests of the First, the leader of former Drones who have gained sentience and now fight for their freedom. But the civil war becomes a secondary concern when the player learns that the Abraxians have betrayed the Federation and have now allied themselves with the Borg.

Evacuating Starfleet personnel off the Main Operating Base is now the priority as a Borg armada enters the system. Along with the U.S.S. Shuriken and the U.S.S. Ragged Glory, the player engages the Borg fleet in an effort to buy time. The final step involves beaming down to Station Azure 9 to disable transporter scramblers so the remaining Starfleet personnel can be beamed to safety by the U.S.S. Franklin.

Once again the situation turns and the Abraxians are left pleading for the player’s help. The Borg don’t make deals and now the Abraxians face assimilation. Without any means to defend themselves and their secret revealed, it’s up to the player to save the Abraxians by neutralizing the Borg threat to Facility One. In the process, the player fundamentally alters the playing field in the war between the Abraxians and the First.
