Confuse is a type of debuff that causes targets to themselves randomly target other objects, either friend or foe. It is similar to placate, in that it generally causes targeted foes to stop targeting the player. It is however distinct from placate as a confused foe will still be able to target the player, albeit less easily.
In PvP confused players will see all objects as both friend and foe. Confused players can target friendlies with weapons and debuffs and foes with buffs and heals. This means that a confused player must be very careful to explicitly select targets manually or risk healing their opponents and firing on their team-mates.
In addition to this effect, a high-level confuse such as that produced by Scramble Sensors III causes even manually selected targets to be automatically re-targetted at random when an ability is activated. The three 'team' abilities; Tactical Team, Engineering Team, and Science Team are immune to this effect.
Tactics[edit | edit source]
Confuse is best used against large groups of enemies that are in tight formation, so as to hit as many as possible at once. This will cause the NPC enemies to attack each other, softening them up for a player to then destroy them more easily. Player enemies. A carrier is an ideal target for a confuse ability, as its spawn pets will attack it, thus turning them to the player's advantage.
Confuse is hard-countered by Science Team, though players can manage the impact of confuse by careful target selection or by simply leaving combat. When a player becomes confused they should immediately take steps to counter it, as potentially turns the players own weapons and abilities against them and their team. Confuse frequently wreaks havoc among players both new and experienced alike, sowing confusion in players, as it requires greatly increased concentration to manage the effects of this debuff.
Confuse is highly controversial within the community, as it is considered by many to be overpowered and unfun to play against.
