Boilerplate:Foundry mission article

From Star Trek Online Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

This article provides information on starting, expanding upon, and completing articles about foundry missions in Star Trek Online.

Overview[edit source]

To create a foundry mission article on STOWiki, it is necessary to perform the following steps:

  1. Highlight everything beginning starting just below the "Syntax" heading below down to just before the "Comments" heading. Either right click and select "Copy" or press Ctrl-C (or the equivalent keyboard shortcut for copy in your browser).
  2. In the search box, type the following (replacing the parts in italics with the reference information):
    Foundry:mission name (mission id)
    As an example: The Syndicate Extraction (ST-HA29RR56G)
  3. The page should not already exist. If not, you should see the following on the search results page:
    Create the page "Foundry:The Syndicate Extraction (ST-HA29RR56G)" on this wiki!
  4. Click on the title to open the new page for editing.
  5. Either right click and select "Paste" or press Ctrl-V (or the equivalent keyboard shortcut for paste in your browser).
  6. The syntax you've just pasted provides instructions for what information needs to be filled in where. Simply replace the descriptions of what information to add with that information. Some parts may not apply and can be simply deleted.
  7. If you are not familiar with basic wikicode, you may wish to open the following page in another tab or browser window: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Formatting
  8. Try to remember to preview your results before saving to avoid having to constantly reopen the page for editing and saving repeatedly. While wiki editors do tend to be understanding about forgetting to preview (many experienced editors are still very bad about it), saving a page an excessive number of times in a short timeframe is frowned upon.
  9. It can be helpful to other editors if you put a short description of what you're doing (i.e. "Creating a page for my foundry mission") in the summary box, but this is not necessary.
  10. When you are done, click the "Save page" button at the bottom.

When you need to edit the page again, navigate to your foundry page. You can do so by repeating step 1 above, following a link from Foundry:Portal, or following a link from Foundry:List of missions. Links to your mission page should be automatically placed on those two pages once your page is initially created, but this may not happen immediately. Once at your page, simply click the edit button that appears at the top of the page.

Note: We are waiting for the installation of a wiki extension that will streamline the process of getting the syntax below onto new foundry mission pages (as well as other pages of the wiki). Until then, it is necessary to manually copy and paste this syntax onto new pages as per the instructions above.

Syntax[edit source]

{{ugcinfo
  |name=the mission name (optional - if omitted, template uses the page title to determine this)
  |faction=Faction the player needs to be to accept the mission (use either Starfleet or Klingon)
  |player=the @account name of the mission designer (include the @) (optional)
  |user=the STOwiki user name of the mission designer (optional)
  |level=the level of character the mission is designed for
  |preceded=the mission that precedes this one (optional, omit the Foundry: part)
  |followed=the mission that follows this one (optional, omit the Foundry: part)
  |released=the date the mission was released, e.g. August 31, 2011
  |location=system or social hub where the first objective is located (do not include brackets)
}}
Right at the beginning of the article give a one- or two-sentence abstract what this mission is about. E.g.: "In '''Mission Title''' the player liberates a Federation Outpost from a Klingon siege."

== Synopsis ==
Describe the story of the mission in your own words. Write from a third-person perspective about what the player encounters. Do not address the player directly using second-person pronouns. The Synopsis should be more elaborate than the abstract and cover all steps of the mission. Do not limit the synopsis to objectives, instead concentrate on giving background and story information. It is also permissive to describe the mood and setting of the mission. You can create links to sub-articles of your mission (like an NPC) using the {{ugc|Foobar}} convenience template. links to canon articles are created by putting the name of the article in brackets, such as [[starship]] and [[United Federation of Planets|Federation]]. For canon Star Trek references, not found on STOWiki.org, but Memory-Alpha.org, use the {{MAlpha|dyson's sphere}} template.

If the player's starship name is referenced, use '''<shipname>'''. For the player's name, use '''<name>'''. For the player's rank, use '''<rank>'''.

They will be shown in non-bold, gray text.

Make sure this text is on the next line after the beginning pipe symbol ("|"), and the ending "}}" part is on a new line also.

Comments[edit source]

Ugcinfo template[edit source]

Use the {{Ugcinfo}} template to create the info box.

This template creates an infobox for use on foundry mission pages as per UGC policy. It automatically adds a UGC disclaimer on top of the page.

Usage:

{{ugcinfo
  |name=the mission name (optional - if omitted, template uses the page title to determine this)
  |faction=Faction the player needs to be to accept the mission (use either Starfleet or Klingon)
  |player=the @account name of the mission designer (include the @) (optional)
  |user=the STOwiki user name of the mission designer (optional)
  |level=the level of character the mission is designed for
  |preceded=the mission that precedes this one (optional, omit the Foundry: part)
  |followed=the mission that follows this one (optional, omit the Foundry: part)
  |released=the date the mission was released, e.g. August 31, 2011
  |location=system or social hub where the first objective is located (do not include brackets)
}}

Abstract[edit source]

In the beginning of the article put one or two lines that describe, what the mission is all about (plotwise). A more elaborate synopsis follows.

Synopsis[edit source]

This should be written like an synopsis for an episode guide. This paragraph should be covering the whole mission and not only focus on objectives and gameplay, but primarily the story that is told. When you need to refer to the story protagonist, call him or her "the player" and try to use a gender neutral sentence structure.

Outline =[edit source]

The outline is the place for the point-of-view looking at the objectives of the mission. It's a concentrated summary of what your mission journal and objectives window is displaying.

Mission text[edit source]

Using the missiontext template as above, copy the exact wording of the introductory text explaining the mission, at which point the player is to accept or decline the mission.

Goal[edit source]

Using the missiongoal template as above, copy the exact wording of the mission's goal, which is displayed in green within the game (as well as in the mission article itself).

Objectives[edit source]

This is a bulleted list of the objectives for this mission, copied verbatim from within the game's mission log.

NPCs[edit source]

This covers all selectable NPCs in the game world (including turrets and other inanimate objects) as well as off-the-map NPC contacts (like a calling Captain in a space mission). Group the NPCs based on the in-game info window.

NPC starships[edit source]

The same as NPCs, but this time not individuals and ground forces, but starships.

Walkthrough[edit source]

The walkthru template will automatically determine if there is an existing Walkthrough sub-page (e.g. Mission: Name of Mission/Walkthrough), and add a link to it, giving the player a chance to view mission information without being immediately spoiled by the ending of the mission and how to complete it.

Remember to include the {{Ugcbanner}} template at the top of all walkthrough pages and all other pages related to your foundry mission.

Notes[edit source]

Any additional notes relating to the mission at hand would go here, in bulleted list form. Information about permanent changes to the game play, for instance, would go here.
