The Klingon Empire is one of three playable factions in Star Trek Online, the others being the United Federation of Planets and the Romulan Republic. It is the official state of the Klingon people, originally founded by the legendary Klingon Warrior Kahless. The Empire is lead by the Chancellor of the High Council and its primary military branch is the Klingon Defense Force.
Since the events of Star Trek Nemesis, the Klingon Empire has expanded its territory, notably its take over of the Gorn homeworld, but also various other species such as the Nausicaans and the Orion. Letheans offered assistance in the form of mercenary work for the Klingon Empire, and as such are available to them as a playable race in game although they are not a fully admitted member of the Klingon Empire.
Player Characters
Like Federation and Romulan characters, Klingon players must choose a career (analogous to a 'class' from other MMORPGs) and a species (or race). Neither can be subsequently altered. Later, when the player reaches a higher rank, a starship must also be selected, which can, however, be changed at any time.
Classes
In Star Trek Online players may choose which career they wish their character to adopt. Players are able to currently choose from the following three careers:
Tactical | Engineering | Science |
Each profession has its own advantages (and, of course, disadvantages) in the game play of Star Trek Online.
Races
Klingon characters have a range of races to choose from, each of which offers unique traits and abilities. A player's choice of race is important and cannot be changed, so it is advisable to choose carefully.
Alien | Ferasan[1] | Gorn | Klingon | Lethean | Liberated Borg[2] |
Joined Trill[1] | Nausicaan | Orion |
Starships
There are four main types of playable Klingon Defense Force vessel, each with numerous sub-types for different ranks and styles of play, and each of those sub-types with a number of cosmetic variants.
Bird-of-Prey | Raptor | Battle Cruiser | Warship |
Storyline missions
Culture
Klingon culture values tradition, ritual, and above all, honor. All Klingons are expected to become warriors, and those who are unable to fight are obliged to commit ritual suicide. While Klingons are not religious and do not have deities, there is a strong belief in the afterlife. Klingons who die with honor go to Sto-vo-kor, while those who are dishonored are taken to Gre'thor on the Barge of the Dead.
History
- See also the full article about the Klingon Empire on Memory Alpha.
The Klingon Empire was forged by Kahless the Unforgettable in the 9th Century, who established the importance of the warrior caste, and the tenets of modern day Klingon society. In the 22nd Century the Empire came into contact with the United Federation of Planets. The relations between the two powers deteriorated, leading to a brief open war in the 23rd Century. The destruction of Praxis in 2293 turned the tides and led to the Khitomer Accords, which would culminate in a firm Klingon-Federation alliance in the 24th Century. In 2405, the relative peace between the Federation and the Empire is ended when Starfleet establishes a blockade of the Hromi Cluster. Five years later, a cease-fire is re-established between both powers in order to jointly counter the Iconian threat.
Politics
- See also: Klingon High Council & Great Houses
The Empire is a feudal monarchy, where influence and allegiance is divided into great houses, such as that of B'vat. Though the official head of state is the Emperor Kahless, the real executive power is held by the Klingon High Council led by the Chancellor, currently J'mpok. Throughout the Empire, the High Council's will is represented by local governors. The Klingon military, the Klingon Defense Forces, also holds certain power and political influence, as it is its Commanders and Generals on who any Chancellor's authority relies.
