Cardassians are the dominant species of the Cardassian Union. Their home world is Cardassia in the Alpha Quadrant. After the Dominion War the Cardassians have struggled to reform their society.
Physical appearance
Cardassians are gray skinned humanoids. They are easily identified by their unusually wide necks and a spoon-shaped bone on their foreheads. Cardassians favor heat and aridity, conditions also found on Cardassia.
Other information
The Cardassian Union, in the 24th century, was an aggressive, military-dominated, and expansionist power (similar to the Klingon Empire). They conquered and occupied Bajor for approximately half the century, constructing the space station Terok Nor (now known as Deep Space Nine) as a base of operations for the occupation forces. During this time, Cardassian forces also fought a minor war against the Federation.
During the 2360s, the Cardassian Union was forced to evacuate its occupation forces from Bajor and sign a treaty with the Federation. A Demilitarized Zone was created along the new Federation-Cardassian border to protect a number of colonies which had found themselves on the 'wrong' sides of the new border. The colonists then engaged in a minor war with one another (the Federation colonists calling themselves the Maquis, and the Cardassian colonists being secretly backed by the Cardassian government). Eventually, as the Dominion War began, the Cardassian colonists emerged victorious, the Maquis colonies were destroyed, and the area was re-occupied by the Dominion and Cardassian forces.
During the Dominion War, the Cardassian Union was an ally and member of the Dominion.
