Without doubt, many players are drawn to Star Trek Online because they cherish the Star Trek universe, its characters, setting and the multitude of stories told over the span of more than 700 TV episodes and twelve movies. This article gives an overview over the canon elements of Star Trek which appear in-game (see "What is canon?" for details).

What is canon?

The Star Trek Franchise

Canon vs. Soft-Canon

For Star Trek, canon is defined as anything that has appeared "on screen" - either in one of the six television series or in one of the twelve Star Trek movies.

Anything besides TV shows and movies is part of the expanded universe, sometimes also referred to as soft-canon. This includes novels, reference books, video games, and related materials. These stories tend to contradict each other from time to time, and have often been contradicted by television episodes and films.

Prime Universe vs. Alternate Universe

As of 2009, two story continuities of Star Trek exist. All stories told before the 2009 movie are part of the so-called "Prime Universe", which details the adventures of Captains Archer, Kirk, Picard, Sisko and Janeway. The 2009 movie introduced the so-called "Alternate Universe", a collection of reboot stories, which tell an alternate, modernized version of Star Trek.

Star Trek Online is set in the Prime Universe, 30 years after the last on-screen appearance of the U.S.S. Enterprise-E ("Star Trek: Nemesis"). The game is only marginally influenced by the new Alternate Universe - most prominently the destruction of Romulus was mentioned in the 2009 film. Occasionally, the game has also drawn from soft-canon works (e.g., the character of Mackenzie Calhoun or the layout of the sector blocks within the game), though it has also contradicted numerous stories set after the events of "Nemesis".

As part of the Star Trek franchise, the game itself has to be considered soft-canon, as any new TV series or movie could easily contradict its stories and settings.

Additional references

  • Almost all in-game technologies, items and abilities are references to Star Trek lore. The same applies to most races, ship classes and star systems. Their origins can easily be searched on Memory Alpha.
  • One notable piece of technology is the Red Matter Capacitor, as it is likely the only in-game item based on the 2009 movie franchise, which is otherwise not present in Star Trek Online. Story-wise, the device was still developed in the Prime Universe and not the movie's Alternate Universe (see "Star Trek" for more details).
  • Throughout the game, many references are made to the fictional history of the Star Trek universe. The chronology articles give an overview over historic events related to Star Trek Online (see also 22nd Century, 23rd Century, and 24th Century).
  • Actor Zachary Quinto has also appeared in-game as the voice of an EMH. Quinto is otherwise better known for playing Spock in the 2009 movie franchise.
