The [Subspace Field Modulator] is a rare re-usable Ship Device which temporarily increases the player's damage resistance rating (DRM) against energy weapon damage, while dramatically decreasing the player's resistance to proton damage. This bonus works in the same way as the Starship Hull Plating skill and stacks with that skill, as well as any other damage resistance buffs that are applied to the player. The device is a reward for completing the “Skirmish” mission, which is the first mission in the Devidian story arc.

[edit] Game Description

This subspace field modulator has an extremely sensitive phase discriminator.

[edit] Ability: Subspace Field Modulator

When the Subspace Field Modulator is activated, the ship phases out of its current variance, granting a resistance to all damage for a short period of time. While in this phase variance you will be highly susceptible to Proton damage.

[edit] Notes

The [Subspace Field Modulator] makes the player extremely susceptible to Proton damage. When the device was originally added, there were no sources of proton damage (from space combat) in the game. This allowed players to use the device at any time without worrying about the lowered proton damage resistance rating.

Starting with the introduction of the Tholians in Season 6, the [Nukara Web Mine Launcher] and [Console - Universal - Tholian Web Generator] became the first sources of the damage type in space combat. With Season 8 and Season 9, additional weapons were introduced making the damage type more accessible to players. Because of this, when in PvP, the device must now be used strategically, taking care not to use the device when other players are using proton weapons. Also, when in PvE, the device should not be used when fighting Tholians.
