Ketracel White - commonly known as 'White' - is a drug consumed by Jem'Hadar which gives them damage and health boosts. It is also required for them to Shroud. It is, however, highly toxic to non-Jem'Hadar and will cause debuffs if consumed by them. It can only be used out of combat.

Usage and effect[ | ]

White Vorta

The ceremonial gift of White, following the oath of loyalty

White contains all essential dietary nutrients for the Jem'Hadar, alleviating their need to eat or drink. It also functions as a powerful narcotic designed to ensure the loyalty of the Jem'Hadar through dependence. This addiction is based on the Jem'Hadar requiring an enzyme which White provides, that their body is unable to produce naturally. (Hippocratic Oath")

If a Jem'Hadar is deprived of White, they suffer withdrawal symptoms including pain, anxiety, loss of mental control, and inability to "shroud". Ultimately, they spiral into homicidal insanity until their entire genetic structure collapsed. (Rocks and Shoals")

The distribution of White is tightly controlled by the Dominion and given to the Jem'Hadar by Vorta in formal ceremonies where they pledge their allegiance to the Founders. Julian Bashir attempted to cure the addiction on two occasions, but in both cases failed to replicate White or remove the dependence on it. (The Abandoned", Hippocratic Oath")

There are rare cases however where a mutation in the Jem'Hadar's genetic code means they are born without the addiction. A Jem'Hadar with this mutation might not realise they can survive without White until they are forced by circumstance to stop taking it. (Hippocratic Oath")

Player dependency[ | ]

While Jem'Hadar are meant to die if they do not receive White, Jem'Hadar player captains and bridge officers (of all factions) receive no penalty for not taking it other than the loss of the boosts it provides and appearing fatigued & disorientated. The fatigued state is removed once the player completes “Home”, due to the events of that mission, but the rush remains.

History[ | ]

NOTE: This section contains spoilers for the Gamma Quadrant arc

Ketracel White originated on the planet Havas-Kul. It was originally a type of fungus (referred to by Julian Bashir as the "Ketracel Precurser") that thrived in the harsh radiation bombarding the planet. As such, it became a staple of the Hur'q diet and their physiology was dependent upon it. The Dominion encountered the Hur'q and found them, physically, to be ideal warriors. But they were too free-thinking and the Dominion needed a way to subjugate them. During the Hur'q hibernation cycle, the Dominion removed the fungus from Havas-Kul, intending to offer them a choice when they emerged from hibernation: subjugation or death. ( “Doomed to Repeat”, “Tenebris Torquent”)

However, the Hur'q were far more dependent upon it than the Dominion had wagered. They developed severe neurological disorders, leading them to become incoherent, volatile, and highly aggressive. They went on a rampage of consumption across the galaxy, becoming ever more aggressive and volatile. While the Dominion's plan to turn them into their warriors failed, they were still left with the fungus. They managed to re-engineer it to bind other species to it in a way the Hur'q were. This led to the creation of the White-dependent Jem'Hadar. ( “Doomed to Repeat”, “Tenebris Torquent”)

The Dominion attempted to use White to bind other servitor races, notably the Fek'Ihri who were recreated by Dominion scientists looking to build a new Jem'Hadar based on Klingon genetics. However this failed when the Fek'Ihri managed to break their addiction and join instead with Molor. ( “Doomed to Repeat”)
