The Escort is a (Tier 2) level . It is the first set in the Escort category of that players in are available to purchase if playing on the faction. These ships are available from the rank. Escorts are focused around forward firepower and are the only Federation ship type that can equip . Escort vessels suffer from weaker shields and hulls compared to Science and Cruiser vessels of the same tier.

The Rapier class Escort represents a balance between the more traditional design philosophy of the Saber class, and the more radical-looking Andorian-inspired Ushaan class. The Rapier class was designed by staff from the Starfleet Corps of Engineers who served on the older U.S.S. DaVinci. It has several structural and functional improvements that the DaVinci's crew tested on Saber-class vessels during the .

The Ushaan class Escort takes its name from the traditional , a historical duel to the death. The name is fitting, given the design's similarity to the mining pick the duel is named for.

The Federation Escort is the first of many escort vessels on the way to endgame. This is the first taste of Escort gameplay where quick flying and high-powered weapons can help to keep the player alive. Escort vessels have the fastest turn rate and the ability to use dual cannons at the expense of low crew compliments and reduced hull strength. Shield strength also becomes a concern, but quick maneuvering will allow the ship to distribute the damage across stronger shield quadrants. Equipping along with the skill also allows Escorts to dish out the damage before enemies can retaliate.
