Chimera Heavy Destroyer
Starfleet Corps of Engineers (SCE) has been working on a special new destroyer class starship, designed for high-level combat situations. The project was so secret that access to the Utopia Planitia shipyard was restricted for months while the project was completed. Now, Starfleet Command has decided to offer the ships to its most experienced captains.
The Chimera Heavy Destroyer comes with a Console – Universal – Dynamic Tactical System, which allows the ship to switch between Regenerative Mode and Tactical Mode.
The Chimera's most striking trait is by far the change in appearance enabled by the Dynamic Tactical System. The console effectively turns the Chimera into a "transformer", with three different appearances. When engaging Tactical Mode, the Chimera's saucer splits, with the outer edges expanding and locking into 3 sections. Portions in the middle of the saucer sink lower, pushing the lower saucer to partially obscure the deflector dish. The center portions of the saucer, near the bridge, also raise up to expose the Chimera's Phaser Lotus Array, and the rear pylons angle downwards to move the nacelles below the saucer.
When in Sector Space, the Chimera's pylons angle upwards, like those of a Long Range Science Vessel Retrofit.
With a hull rating equal to a Jem'Hadar Attack Ship and a crew count only slightly lower than an Assault Cruiser, the Chimera has considerable durability for an escort. However, it has a lower turn rate than other escorts, making it less maneuverable and slower to bring cannons to bear.
The Chimera benefits greatly from its unique transformation ability (enabled by the Dynamic Tactical System console). When in Tactical Mode the ship receives a massive boost to Starship Targeting Systems, boosting weapon accuracy, and thus its overall damage (through overcoming defense, as well as increased critical hits). Tactical Mode's Phaser Lotus skill provides a powerful 8-pulse, high-damage version of Fire At Will in the ship's frontal arc, helping punch through the shields of multiple targets. Regenerative Mode's bonus to Shield Systems also improves the ship's ability to take damage as well as recover, and its Tachyon Inversion Beam can strip multiple targets' shields and augment the player's own.
The ship's Bridge Officer layout also increases the ship's versatility. Its Universal Lt. Commander and Ensign Stations allow the player to unlock high-end Engineering, Tactical, and Science powers, making the Chimera a jack-of-all-trades, able to take on multiple roles (sometimes even in mid-mission). The ship's native phaser-based ability benefits from phaser damage-boosting consoles as well, encouraging players to employ phaser-centric weapons setups (though this slightly discourages the use of projectile weapons).
Overall, the Chimera's versatility makes it highly compatible with both beam- and cannon-based weapons setups, effectively allowing it to take on a "beam-escort" playstyle.

Federation starships come with standard equipment and weapons of the lowest mark available at the ship's minimum rank. The items provided are appropriate to the type of vessel and its related playing style.
When equipped with a Dynamic Tactical System in any console slot, the Chimera Heavy Destroyer is capable of switching between Regenerative Mode and Tactical Mode. It also allows 2 new abilities, depending on if the ship is in Regenerative Mode or Tactical Mode.
- Next to the various versions of the Long Range Science Vessel, this is the only other Starfleet ship whose warp nacelles move when entering or exiting warp.
- Counting the windows on the hull the ship is about 22 decks tall.
- Since the addition of the Dyson ships, the animation for the Chimera in all modes does not function correctly. There is currently no fix.
- The Chimera is one of several playable starships that do not require a Starship Upgrade Requisition to be updgraded to T5U level.
