B'rel Bird-of-Prey Retrofit
The B'rel Bird-of-Prey Retrofit is a General (Tier 5) level Klingon Fighter vessel. This Retrofit vessel is a heavily modified version of the B'rel Bird-of-Prey (tier 1). The Klingon Defense Force upgraded this variant with the latest acquired technology seized by the Empire in the early 25th century. This ship is available from the C-Store for 2,000

[edit] B'rel class
The B'rel class has some interesting design features. The wings of the ship have a feathered wing pattern on them to mimic a bird. The main hull has a dual ridged dorsal section with a neck leading off to the bridge. Like all Birds-of-Prey, the vessels wings move up when moving, and then move down when entering combat.[edit] Koloth class
The Koloth class is a more modern variant of the B'rel class, though it follows a very similar design including the iconic feathered pattern on the wings. The Koloth class has a larger engine assembly and the tips of the wings fold outward rather than down.[edit] Performance

[edit] Abilities
Most Klingon vessels are equipped with a cloaking device. The Bird-of-Prey retrofit has an enhanced battle cloak that allows the use of mines and torpedoes while remaining cloaked, as well as most Bridge Officer and Captain abilities.
[edit] Torpedo Boat Configuration
Some captains have sought to take advantage of the B'rel's ability to fire torpedos while cloaked, by configuring the ship to utilize projectile weapons exclusively. Effective configurations include the use of several torpedo types, so as to avoid overlapping cooldowns, and bridge officer abilities used to increase damage dealt.
Key points in designing an effective torpedo boat configuration include:
- Focus on spike damage as opposed to damage per second
- Multiple torpedo types to avoid shared cooldowns
- Enough initial firepower to lower shields, followed by enough to damage the hull
- Minimal time de-cloaked
- Target selection
An example equipment configuration (Kolbrand's Valkyrja Setup):
- Quantum Torpedo Launcher
- Breen Cluster Torpedo
- Tricobalt Torpedo or Bio-Neural Warhead
- Hargh'Peng Torpedo Launcher
- 2 pieces of Klingon Honor Guard STF Set (for projectile damage boost)
- 3 Projectile Damage Consoles
In the example configuration, the B'rel captain would activate all buffs (especially Torpedo High Yield III), approach the target, and fire the Quantum Torpedos, followed by the Breen Cluster. They would then fire the Bio-Neural Warhead, followed by the Hargh'Peng. With a proper bridge officer setup, and certain captain powers, the combination of these charges hitting in quick succession is often enough to lower shields and destroy the target's hull in the space of a few seconds. Due to the utilization of multiple torpedo types, generic damage-boosting consoles should be chosen over those which only enhance a specific damage type.
The torpedo boat configuration of the B'rel is most effective in unrestricted PVP such as that found in Ker'rat, where the captain can locate suitable targets and escape if needed. Due to long cooldowns on some damage-boosting abilities, the torpedo boat configuration may suffer in Arena PVP, though it can be a force multiplier under some circumstances (Effective team, selection of targets with low shield strength. The PVP strengths and weaknesses of the B'rel carry over into its PVE utility. In STF situations, it will be highly effective at destroying large, strong targets due to its high spike damage, but will suffer when required to engage multiple, weaker opponents.
While tactical captains are best suited to make use of the torpedo boat configuration, effective science captain configurations are known to exist. It is also worth noting that the B'rel is capable of laying mines without breaking cloak, an attribute some torpedo boat configurations make use of.
