Advanced Heavy Cruiser
The Advanced Heavy Cruiser is a Commander (Tier 3) level Federation Cruiser. Known as Excelsior class, this ship type has been in Starfleet service since the late 23rd century. These cruisers are more capable than a normal Federation Heavy Cruiser
 Excelsior class
The Excelsior class was a popular and reliable Starfleet ship used for almost a century. The first ship, the namesake U.S.S. Excelsior, was constructed in the 2280s and designed originally for a prototype of a Transwarp Drive (as seen in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock). Despite the failure of the drive, Starfleet recommissioned the Excelsior with a standard warp drive, and began producing more Excelsior-class ships to replace the aging Constitution-class.
The Excelsior-class proved to be a reliable and versatile design, and is still in active service alongside much newer ships. The Excelsior-class participated in the Dominion War and the Battle of Wolf 359.
The Excelsior-class, similar to the Constitution-class, underwent a major refit program, adding additional impulse engines, modifications to the warp nacelles, and the expansion of the engineering hull. These modifications are available on the Tier 5 variant of this vessel.
The Advanced Heavy Cruiser gains 2 more weapon slots and 350 more crew over the Tier 2 Cruiser, allowing the player to better survive heavy combat situations due to the better repair rates and weapon slots. Learning to broadside enemies normally gets better results than a head on confrontation, as Cruisers are made for broadsides. As the broadsides take a lot of weapons power, the player may wish to use a Plasma Distribution Manifold console to lessen this.
Compared to the standard Heavy Cruiser, the Advanced Heavy Cruiser carries an additional 250 crew for a total of 750, as well as being able to equip the Transwarp Universal Console. Other than this the two ships perform near-identically.
